Want a positive Steam review? It only costs $5

For some users, Steam has been a service with questionable ethics from the beginning.

Being both a distributor and a publisher, Valve has the option to control prices and give favour to their games. Instead, they’ve proven over the years that they can run Steam ethically.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop others from offering good reviews for only $5. For PCGamesN, it all started with a mass message sent out to the users offering these ‘services’. Not trying to hide his identity at all, it users didn’t bother checking out who he was.

All they cared about was getting money in exchange for a positive review. The author of the article explicitly asked sellers if the review would be positive, and only one said that his would be honest. “If you’re looking for those kinds of fake reviews, there are plenty on Fiverr who provide such a service. However, I would suggest that you take great care because while in the short term such schemes may make your product look good, it usually ends up doing more harm in the long run.”

In addition to that, PCGamesN noted that he puts a disclaimer at the beginning of all of his Steam reviews.

The website that is offering these services if Fiverr. Or rather, users who signed up on Fiverr. The website offers oddjobs for different kinds of services. Of the Steam Review profiles he checked out, there are some that appear on two or more profiles. They are:

AdvertCity Apocalypse Hotel Areeb World Blood of Magic Cat Simulator Centauri Sector Counter-Strike: Global Offensive D3DGear Egyptian Senet Epic Character Generator Epic Showdown Garfield Kart Gods Vs Humans Home Design 3D Hospital Manager Moto Racer Collection Nostradamus: The Last Prophecy Prehistorik Shiplord Super Hexagon

Although the author does note that games like Super Hexagon and Counter-Strike: Global Offense are unlikely to pay for reviews, seeing as how popular the games are. The full article can be read on PCGamerN, and it gives an interesting look into a very unethical situation.

Internet Blocker

If you tend to surf the web a little too much from your mobile devices, computers and tablets you might be interested in a new Internet blocker application that has been created by a developer based in France. That allows you to easily take a break from being continually connected.

The Internet blocker is currently available via the Kickstarter crowdfunding website and is looking to raise $30,000 over the next 14 days to make the jump into production. So if you feel you or your family could do with a little downtime away from connectivity it might be worth a little more investigation.

Watch the video below to learn more about the new Internet blocker app that supports all operating systems and devices and is easy to install and setup. Its French developer Michel explains more about his inspiration and design.

With the help of developers all around the world, I have created a simple-to-use internet-blocker application that I decided to name Skeebloo (“Skeebloo”, deriving from the vision of blue skies, think Macfreedom and K9–with a philosophy difference described further below). It is already on sale on truetime-applications.com, but I would like to introduce the product line to android and iOS users.

With your generous support, I would also like to help evolve, in time, Skeebloo’s functionalities. The philosophy here is not only to help those with internet addiction, but over time to help the many more who have machine addiction—tablets, smartphones…

Skeebloo is a no-fuss-no-muss internet-blocker. As opposed to the other internet blockers out on the market today, it is sufficiently cheat-proof to do what is advertised: shut off your LAN access for a determined period of time, which means that once your computer is offline, it remains offline, no matter how much you tinker with the native system (such as rebooting, uninstalling the app itself while the latter is active, etc

For more information on the new Internet blocker application jump over to the Kickstarter website for details and to make a pledge from $40 via the link below.

Valve releases a SteamVR test for your computer

Valve releases a SteamVR test for your computer

SteamVR is not the only Virtual Reality hitting the market soon, with PlayStationVR, ViveVR, and Oculus Rift all expected to release this year.

However, Valve appears to have the most promising system scheduled for release. With SteamVR free for developers, it was June last year when they first started shipping them outto developers.

It isn’t an unknown fact that you’ll need a powerful computer to run most VR systems, and you don’t want to spend money (Over $400) on a peripheral that you can’t properly run.

Thankfully, for those looking at getting SteamVR, they’ve developed a test. The application can be downloaded here, and it takes you through a Portal themed test that will give you suggestions on how to upgrade your computer should you need to.

Vive VR priced at $800 USD, but here's why

Vive VR priced at $800 USD, but here's why

With pre-orders opening February 29 th , Vive VR is noticeably more expensive than the already announced $600 price-point of Oculus Rift.

Valve and HT have announcedtheir VR headset, Vive VR, will ship this April for $799 USD.

, Vive VR is noticeably more expensive than the already announced $600 price-point of Oculus Rift. But in all, the consumer edition will include the headset, two wireless controllers, 360 degree tracking and room scale movement sensors, and two games.

Rift’s similar Touch controllers are not included with the Oculus Rift and will be sold separately at a later date.

Vive VR differs from its competitors even further in the fact it allows full 3D mapping of a room, and tracks the player’s position in it. Valve and HTC have announced the consumer edition will have integrated phone functionality. Players will be able to receive and respond to incoming and missed calls, text messages, and even calendar alerts.

While pre-orders of the Rift received EVE Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale, Vive will include Job Simulator and Fantastic Contraption.

Job Simulator is a tongue-in-cheek game in which players must complete mundane jobs in a world where robots have replaced the human work force.

Fantastic Contraption on the other hand allows players to build strange contraptions, tasking you to make them run.

“But it’s not just about gaming,” the announcement made sure to clarify. “In addition to these launch titles, HTC is working with developers to foster the creation of content that spans multiple sectors including entertainment, retail, education, design, healthcare and automotive that will ultimately transform people’s lives.”

The only other major VR headset that has yet to set a price-point is PlayStation VR. Though Sony had previously said it would be out in the first half of 2016, a recent interview with the head of GameStop suggests otherwise.

Fallout 4's second DLC Wasteland Workshop now has a trailer

Fallout 4's second DLC Wasteland Workshop now has a trailer

The second DLC for Fallout 4, Wasteland Workshop, has finally received a trailer.

The trailer for the DLC has a voice over which explains the whole end-of-the-world situation, just in case that one went over your head for the past few games. The player is then seen putting together a house, which features multiple traps. Nixie tube lighting and Taxidermy are both new features for creating your settlements in Fallout 4.

However, the highlight of the trailer is perhaps the traps. Used to catch wildlife, such as cats and nightmares, you can then learn to control them. After capturing the beasts you can release them and pit them against fellow settlers in the area, offering for a barbaric form of entertainment at best. I don’t think we want to think about what the worst case scenario would be in this situation.

Bethesda also took the time to tease the third planned DLC for Fallout 4, Far Harbor. Players will have the opportunity to travel to Maine in the DLC, and Bethesda is boasting that it is the largest land mass they have ever created for add-on content.

NASA Mars 2030 VR Project Makes You Feel Like You Are Actually On Mars (video)

A new virtual reality experience is being created which has been backed by NASA called Mars 2030 and is being created to provide an immersive application that allows users to feel in some way what it is like to stand on the surface of Mars.

Mars 2030

Mars 2030 was developed using scientifically accurate satellite imagery and data gathered in years of exploration missions and has been created using NVIDIA VRWorks technologies.

Check out the trailer below to see what you can expect from the Mars 2030 project which is being created to provide the feeling of standing on Mars. Justin Sonnekalb, a game designer working on the Mars 2030 project explains :

We want you to feel like you’re standing on mars. – We want you to feel like you’re actually there. NASA is providing technical expertise to FUSION through a Space Act Agreement to make the first Mars surface VR experience based on actual operational and hardware concepts that the agency is currently studying.

Mars 2030 was created by FUSION in collaboration with NASA and is powered by Nvidia GeForce. It simulates being on the Red Planet in a level of graphics fidelity that is only possible with NVIDIA VRWorks technologies. Our CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, introduced it to Steve Wozniak to try out during ‎GTC 2016.

In a recent interview NVIDIA’s Zvi Greenstein, GM of GeForce Desktop explained a little more about the experience :

You basically have the real Martian terrain… the real topography with rocks… the lightning model is accurate, the gravity model is accurate… the development team recorded the actual sound from the rover. – The rover, the habitat [modules], the labs… whatever you see in this application is based on actual CAD models provided by NASA…

Fallout 4 Survival Mode out on PC

Fallout 4 Survival Mode out on PC

If you’ve been enjoying Fallout 4 on the PC, Bethesda has released the beta for Survival Mode.

Survival in Fallout 4 strays from the original game. Now at a higher level(and presumably you’ve beaten the game), Bethesda wants to provide players with a way of playing the game similar to Dark Souls. What that means is they have two or more systems that push against each other, propelling the player forward. The results was four pillars for Survival Mode. Strategy, Exploration, Resource Management, and Role Playing.

To accomplish these goals, Bethesda has made a few major changes to the game in Survival Mode. First is Saving with Sleep. Quick saving, manual, and almost all of the auto saves found in the game have been disabled. If you want to save your game, you’ll have to sleep for at least one hour in a proper bed. You have to plan your steps more carefully, making sure that you know whether you can handle something or not – in other words your fallback options are reduced.

They’ve also disabled Fast Travel. You can’t port from place to place on the map anymore, you’ll have to find your way around just like you would in real life. And perhaps the most important factor added into Fallout 4: Survival Mode is the Increased Lethality. You can deal, and also take, more damage then ever before. It’s about strategy now, not running in guns ablazing.

If you want full details on Fallout 4’s Survival Mode, you can find the details on the latest.

Ubisoft survey mentions Skyrim 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Titanfall 2

Ubisoft survey mentions Skyrim 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Titanfall 2

Oops?
A new survey posted by Ubisoft this morning is asking players for their opinion on the Assassin’s Creed series and its upcoming title, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate , but the survey also asks players opinions on a few games – some that certainly exist and some that may or may not.

One question on the survey phrased as “Which of the following games are you planning to purchase?” includes Skyrim 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Titanfall 2 along known titles as choices such as Mad Max, Mortal Kombat X, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Halo 5, Fallout 4 and more.

Did Ubisoft just confirm a bunch of titles in the survey? Wording the question in this way suggests that these are confirmed games to be released. While it’s been known that Titanfall 2 is definitely coming, the other two have not been revealed or confirmed by Bethesda or Rockstar, but both performed admirably well when the initial games in the series were released.

Another question in the survey asks players to rate the games in the Assassin’s Creed series on a  scale of 1-10 alongside games such as The Last of Us, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and the Batman Arkham games. Additional questions include asking how players would like to see future AC games change, number of consoles players own, where each player receives their gaming news, and also asking players to rate the quality of Syndicate’s debut trailers.

Are these games legit happening and did Ubisoft let the cat out of the bag? Let us know if you think so below! Meanwhile, check out the Ubisoft survey right here.

Skyrim Paid Mod pulled not long after implemented change

Skyrim Paid Mod pulled not long after implemented change

Creator of a fishing mod in Skyrim; Chesko, has complied and taken off his mod off of the workshop and given refunds after being called out for utilizing assets from a mod belonging to another mod developer; fore06151.

Steam’s new ability for Mod creators to sell their modhas set forth waves of controversy; and fuel has just been dumped all over the flames.

Creator of a fishing mod in Skyrim; Chesko, has complied and taken off his mod off of the workshop and given refunds after being called out for utilizing assets from a mod belonging to another mod developer; fore06151. The developer of the ‘Fore’s New Idles in Skyrim’ mod had straight out stated he is completely against paying for mods as it’s the “end of a working and inventive modding community.”

Prior to pulling his mod off of the shop, Chesko states that while under NDA, he could not discuss and prevent this. He was also told by Steam that as long as it’s seperate and free it was okay.I’m willing to give Chesko the benefit of the doubt and say his intentions were not malicious. He was misinformed and it caused this issue to come up. That said, this is a fairly big case against the new system Steam had implemented.

I honestly believe Steam had played a bad card in their hands; the division created in cases like these could be way worse than what they expected. I’m not exactly sure if it’s Steam that was pushing for this feature or Bethesda considering the division in revenue. Whoever pushed it made a grave mistake; and this might be irreversible unless there is a mass refund.

Paid mods removed from Steam Workshop

Paid mods removed from Steam Workshop

Paid mods were added to the Steam Workshop last week; The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim was the first to have this new feature as a way to test and see how the community responded.

last week; The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim was the first to have this new feature as a way to test and see how the community responded. Shorty after the feature was added a mod was removeddue to it containing another mod without the original creators permission and refunds were given to buyers.

The Skyrim modding community was not happy. Within a few days a petition against the new paid mods reached over 80,000 signaturesmaking it very clear what the community’s stance was. To try and explain the new feature and why it was a good thing Gabe Newell CEO of Steam hosted an Ask Me Anythingpost on Reddit about the recent change; the response was strongly negative with many of his responses being downvoted heavily.

Yesterday Bethesda took to their blogto try and explain why they believed paid mods were a good thing; part of their belief was that only 8% of Skyrim players used a mod and 1% had ever made a Skyrim mod which was far too low of number and they wished to encourage new modders. Bethesda confirmed that they had the final say in the revenue split and though 45% to them would be best as it is industry standard and it was usually successful in both free and paid games.

There are things we can control, and things we can’t. Our belief still stands that our community knows best, and they will decide how modding should work. We think it’s important to offer choice where there hasn’t been before.

According to Bethesda’s post yesterday they only wanted to encourage more support from modders and players for Skyrim however they did acknowledge not all mods will be money worthy so they know this is a difficult topic.

Bethesda updated their blog to announce that paid Skyrim mods would be removed from the Steam Workshop as it’s not what the community wants.

Even though we had the best intentions, the feedback has been clear – this is not a feature you want. Your support means everything to us, and we hear you.

A Steam blog post has confirmed the removal of paid Skyrim mods; anyone who bought a mod during the time the feature was running will be refunding completely and Bethesda agrees with this.

Steam explained their thinking behind having paid mods; they wanted to provide mod makers the opportunity to work on their mods full time and encourage developers to provide modders with better support. They recognise that many great Steam games have been born from mods, Dota and Killing Floor for example, and wanted to help other mod makers move into developing their own game.

Steam has admitted that using Skyrim was a bad move since the modding community is years old and well established; Bethesda commented in their blog that other games will be receiving this feature in the future.

We think this made us miss the mark pretty badly, even though we believe there’s a useful feature somewhere here.

This seems to be the end of paid mods for now; Valve is looking at the feedback from this and hope to come to a better solution for both the community and developers.

Do you think paid mods are a good idea if some changes are made or do you think they should look at another feature? A donation button for example.

No programming is required and there is no software to install. Simply connect a MIDI controller to play the NES classics live or create your own original chiptunes. The design of the Arcano MIDI NES Chiptune Synth II is the culmination of the lessons learned from the original Arcano MIDI NES Chiptune Synthesizer project launched in 2015. The most valuable resource in the development of the Arcano MIDI NES Chiptune Synth II has been the feedback from the community of Kickstarter backers who funded the original project. The Arcano MIDI NES Chiptune Synth II features many hardware and software improvements on its predecessor including:

– more polyphony
– more waveforms
– more patches
– greater bass range
– improved volume envelope system for reduced latency
– linearized vibrato depth
– improved Mega-Man-II-style two-channel echo patches
– USB power
– lower parts count
– filtered audio output (low-pass filter with fixed cutoff frequency)
– better audio signal DC-bias removal

Ever wanted to step into the critically-acclaimed world of The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind, but been put off by its age-old graphics? I know I have, but we’re in luck!

Type 600 Instant Camera Created By The Impossible Project

Type 600 Instant Camera Created By The Impossible Project

There has always been something great about having a physical copy of a photograph from an instant camera, but as smartphones have become more and more popular over the last 10 years instant cameras have nearly become extinct.

Type 600 Instant Camera

One company has taken it upon themselves to stop this extinction and created The Impossible Project, which has taken the original instant camera and reinvented it into the I-1.

The I-1 instant camera is the only new camera that can be used with the original Polaroid format film, and includes a number of features including an iOS application that provides extra creative tools and full manual control via a Bluetooth connection.

As you can see from the image above the I-1 instant camera is also equipped with an advanced ring flash and autofocus providing everything you need to capture great portraits. The Impossible Project website explains more about the 600-type films, from classic white to round frame and their new instant camera and the inspiration behind it.

When Polaroid announced the end of instant film in 2008, Impossible stepped in to buy the last remaining factory, days before it closed down. The machines had already been dismantled, there were no formulas to follow and the supply chain had already been destroyed. If we wanted to keep instant photography alive, we had to reinvent instant film from scratch.

Eight years later, with the help of some incredible chemists, engineers and photographers, we’re the only people in the world who make original format instant film. We make film in both color and black and white, for Polaroid 600-type, SX-70 and Image/Spectra cameras, as well as large format 8×10 film. We also refurbish classic Polaroid cameras so they’re as good as new, and have introduced our own new range of Impossible cameras.

We believe making real photos. Photos with a life after the shutter clicks. Photos that develop in the palm of your hand, ready to pin to the wall or give to a friend. That’s why we’ve spent eight years working on our film formula. It’s why we’re reinventing analog instant photography in a digital world.

The Impossible Project I-1instant camera is expected to officially launch on May 10th and will be priced at around $300. For more information on the new Impossible instant camera jump over to the Impossible Project website for details following the link below.

Koji Oda thought Wesker Mode might break Resident Evil: Zero HD Remaster

Koji Oda thought Wesker Mode might break Resident Evil: Zero HD Remaster

For Koji Oda, working on Resident Evil: Zero HD Remaster wasn’t the first time around with the franchise.

Having directed the production of Resident Evil and Resident Evil: Zero back in the early 2000’s, Oda came back to direct the newest remaster to a beloved horror game.

In a recent interview for the 20th anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise, Koji Oda talks about what it was like to return to a project and some of the difficulties they had in remastering the game.

The 7 minute video goes in depth on the characters, plot, and some of the decisions that were made in the original game. Oda says that the game naturally led to Rebecca as the main protagonist, and remastering the game was more of a challenge then he thought. “We took care to remaster the game and preserve its quality while not affecting the balance of the gameplay.”

Still, the remaster wasn’t enough for the veteran of game development. Instead they decided to add Wesker mode, which is something he feared would break the game and fill it with bugs.

Koji Oda finished the interview by thanking the development team and fans of the series.

Sony is compensating for the 2011 PlayStation Network hack

Sony is compensating for the 2011 PlayStation Network hack

For those that were making use of the PlayStation Network back in 2011, you might remember the service going down for 23 days.

This was part of a large attack towards Sony, hacking into accounts and taking as much information as they could. The hack effected over 70 million customers.

Shortly after the attack was resolved, Sony started a “Welcome Back” promotion and gave out a free game to users. Although it certainly helped ease the pain a bit, one game wasn’t enough for some. And that was shown in a class action settlement against the company in 2014.

If you were effected by the hack and you filled out a lengthy claim form last year, you had picked out the option between getting a free game or extended time on your PlayStation Network account. It’s time to start checking your inboxes, because that e-mail should be on the way.

Since March 2nd of this year Sony has been sending out codes that you can redeem on your PlayStation device, and this puts the settlement behind Sony. (Which cost them over 2 million)

It’s nice to see this finally come to a resolution.

Soundwave is now being crowd funded and has already passed its pledge goal, the transforming tablet is unfortunately not usable as a tablet but creates a 190 mm tall figure below.

To make a pledge and be one of the very first to own the very unique transforming tablet jump over to the MI crowdfunding website via the link below. Hugo Barra explains more :

Xiaomi and Hasbro are collaborating for the first time crowdfunding a kickass robot model named Soundwave in China. Instead of a vehicle transforming into a robot, this time, it’s Mi Pad 2 that gets the Transformers treatment. How cool is that? R&D worked really hard to ensure that the color, details and feel are exactly the same as Mi Pad 2. They were challenged at turning such a slim 7mm tablet into a 3D robot, but they managed to do so with a 30-step folding assembly

ATMO SFERA Platterless Turntable (video)

ATMO SFERA Platterless Turntable (video)

Alexander De Zuanne an Italian based designer has unveiled a new platterless turntable he has created called the ATMO SFERA, which has been designed to provide owners with the the highest quality sound possible from vinyl all from a device that sports the finest Italian design.

ATMO SFERA Platterless Turntable

The platterless turntable has been launched via the Kickstarter crowdfunding website with the aim of raising €40,000 over the next 35 days to make the jump into production. Watch the promotional video below to learn more about its characteristics and platterless turntable design.

Its Italian designer Alexander De Zuanne explains more :

Vinyl means a smooth warm tune, resonating gracefully as it spins. To create this delicacy in sound quality ATMO SFERA is designed by a team of Italian engineers, breaking boundaries by introducing a (almost) disappearing platter as a new paradigm in turntable design. Modern urban lifestyle simply doesn’t need another gigantic round platter, a squared wooden case and a complex piece of mechanics – the tonearm – in such an old – style – furniture called ‘Turntable’.

Days of horse – drawn carriages are passed, at last, but the turntable with its basic design remained the same for about a century. To revolutionize the classic turntable design with all its drawbacks, such as heavy weight, size, playing mechanism and vulnerability to vibration and to achieve the highest sound quality we concentrated on only the vital components, using high-quality materials.

The result is an engineering masterpiece producing playback audio quality, barely surpassed even by the most sought after turntables. In ATMO SFERA Turntable there is no gimmick accessory, it is solely focused on music-making components, with the finest Italian taste for industrial design.

For more information on the new ATMO SFERA platterless turntable jump over to the Kickstarter website for details and to make a pledge from €895.

Sony refuses to refund $500 fraudulent charge

Sony refuses to refund $500 fraudulent charge

UPDATE: After much Tribulation, serfbufo did post an update to Reddit.

UPDATE: After much Tribulation, serfbufo did post an update to Reddit. “ : I got my refund. Thanks again for everyone’s support and all the kind comments about my formatting.”

Sony has not yet commented on the situation, however Reddit user serfbufo did agree to an interview. The full e-mail exchange can be read on pastebin.

Q: In your original post you mention how long you have been dealing with Sony for about 3 months now. You clearly enjoy the companies products and it is someone you choose to support, as you own a PlayStation system and a PlayStation Vita. What is it like to be fighting, in a way, with a company that you enjoy supporting?

I actually do not own a PlayStation system (assuming that refers to PS/PS2/PS3/PS4)—the PlayStation Vita is my first and only PlayStation-brand console. When I purchase products from a company, I generally do not think about “supporting” them unless they are a small company that I feel “needs” the support. That is to say, when I bought my Vita and the games for it, I viewed it as an exchange of a specific amount of money for certain pieces of merchandise with no ethical consideration. I think “Will I derive at least $200 worth of enjoyment from this Vita?”, not “Do I want to give $200 to Sony?”.

As a result, prior to this incident, my view of Sony as a company could be considered neutral, and as my fight with them wore on, it veered deeper and deeper into the negatives. If there is a gaming company that I have a positive opinion of and would feel uncomfortable fighting, it would be Nintendo, whose products and software have had a much bigger impact on my life, and has consistently displayed good service and a philosophy that I agree with. After my experience with Sony, I will probably continue buying Nintendo products, and I’ll be less likely to buy Sony products, especially from the PSN Store.

Q: If you’ve had to deal with other customer services before for a bad product or a necessary refund, how does your experience with Sony compare to the other companies?

I haven’t had to request refunds very much in my life—I usually either just live with a bad product, figuring it’s not worth the hassle, or do adequate research before my purchase so that it isn’t an issue. I’m not one of those people who complains about service any time something isn’t perfect. I only made an exception for this case because it involved something I hadn’t purchased at all.

Q: Do you think that Sony’s customer service is a reflection as to where the gaming industry is headed in the AAA sector? Is bad customer service something that you think we are going to see often?

Sony, as a company, has an obligation to its shareholders to maximize profit. That’s how our society is set up, and unless we want to reform our financial institutions or introduce new consumer-rights regulations and enforcement (both admirable but daunting endeavors), that’s not going to change. I don’t think Sony is evil for providing poor customer service (though some of the questionably legal behavior might be) if they think that’s what will make them the most money, but I expect them to at least match the standards set by consumer rights law and the appropriate regulatory bodies.

However, it is partly our responsibility as consumers to incentivize companies to act the way we want, which includes providing good customer service. This was one of the main reasons I made the post on reddit—creating a connection between bad customer service and negative media attention (which presumably has a negative effect on sales) is key to incentizing Sony to improve their customer service. If enough people decide not to buy PlayStation products because of fears of receiving bad service, and Sony is aware of this fact, it may be what it takes for them to improve that service.

As for the last part of the question, I have no idea. Probably? I don’t know enough to answer with any conviction.

Gamespresso has reached out to serfbufo for comment on the situation, and is currently looking into contacting Sony.

Sony has had issues in the past with customer support and refunding those with a hacked account, but Reddit user /u/serfbufohas definitely taken the cake with this story, and incredible record keeping.

For the past three months, serfbufo has been contacting Sony, trying to get them to refund $499.91 in charges. The reason? his account was hacked, and he didn’t actually purchase the games himself. Taking to Reddit as his last home, serfbufo made a lengthy post on /r/gaming which you can read all of here.

The summary for the post is as follows,

An unknown attacker gains access to my PSN account and makes approximately $500 in charges to my debit card. Sony has a history of security breaches. Because of Sony’s policy of banning accounts from which chargebacks arise, I try to get my money back from Sony without resorting to a chargeback, a process where a bank officially files fraudulent charges against a merchant. Every step of the way, Sony’s representatives promise me my $500 back, yet I only ever see $230 of it. Eventually, Sony tells me that the remaining money cannot be refunded due to a ridiculous technicality. (They apparently cannot process refunds for banned accounts, and the attacker created a sub-account that they suggested I request be banned.) Sony’s representative tells me that “literally” the only way to get my money back is a chargeback. I tell my bank to issue the chargeback. Sony disputes the chargeback using extremely questionable logic that doesn’t even address the fraudulent nature of the original charges, and somehow wins. Currently, I am in the process of re-filing the claim, this time trying to make it very clear that it is a case of fraud, not whatever Sony claims it is.

But there is so much more detail to it then that.

Serfbufo provides some background, explaining that he owns one PlayStation console, and a PlayStation Vita. In the post, he claims that “My only interaction with the PlayStation Network is that I occasionally buy games from the PSN Store (no online play, etc.),”

After discovering a few e-mails from Sony thanking him for his purchase, serfbufo investigated as quickly as he could. Discovering a sub-account under his account with the charges, he decided to try and settle it with PlayStation Network, as Sony has a habit of banning people who issue a charge back from their bank. He revoked permission to his account from the sub-account, changed his passwords, and removed his card information from being stored in PlayStation Network.

In his first attempt to contact Sony, it was after hours in their live chat. He was greeted with an image that could lead people to believe that the service doesn’t actually exist.

On August 19th, 2015, serfbufo managed to have a chat with Evelyn, from PlayStation. In the end, Evelyn assured serfbufo with the following message,
“Evelyn: PlayStation takes all security matters seriously. Your case will be passed on to our Trust and Safety team for investigation and you will hear back from us within 5 business days.”

The full transcript can be read here, and it appears as if serfbufo has made serious progress by being polite to customer support. Huh, who knew?

Sony e-mailed serfbufo back within a few days, claiming that they will be offering him a ‘gesture of goodwill’ to reverse the transactions. They did explain in the e-mail that it would take some time to see the refunds apply (about 1-2 months) but it would happen.

“A couple more days pass, and I see that two of the four charges to my card had been reversed. Awesome! Just two more to go! At this point, $229.97 of the total $499.91 has been returned to me. I also notice that there is $55 sitting in my PlayStation wallet (down from the $150 that was there after the fraudulent charges, but up from the $0 that was there prior to this whole mess). Anyway, any day now, the other two charges will be reversed and this will all be over with. Any day now.

Any day now…”

For anyone who has had a debit or credit card attacked, you could relate to serfbufo’s impatience in this situation. $499.91 is a lot of money, and Sony is known for being hacked on a regular basis. Judging by the e-mail, they clearly didn’t want to refund him the money, and would much rather blame it on him then their faulty security.

Serfbufo contacted the live chat again and was re-directed to the phones, where he actually recorded the audiowith the agent and put the transcript up in pastebin.

Dealing with services like Microsoft, Sony, or even Bell Canada in the past, this phone call is absolutely insane. At no point does the person on the other end of the phone call give an actual answer , he simply blames it on the bank and tries to make them solve it. Serfbufo had this to say in his Reddit post regarding the email,

“Okay, so the thing about it being sent to my PlayStation wallet was a false alarm. Good, good. Still, I am a little worried about this taking too long, since I want to file for a chargeback with my bank if this doesn’t work out, and there’s usually a 1-2 month time limit for that.

I call up my bank and they say that any credits should be posted more or less immediately on their online banking service, but I’ll give everyone the benefit of the doubt and be patient for a little longer.”

After going a few weeks and seeing no refunds, serfbufo contacted and confirmed that his MasterCard had no pending refunds. He still didn’t have the money back from Sony. So, back to the phone calls he goes. Serfbufo is transferred to billing and talking to Victor, when he gets put on hold so Victor can grab a supervisor. After 15 minutes of being on hold, the call disconnects. Serfbufo calls back and gets Warren this time, with two audio files( Part 1& Part 2), and a full text transcript here.

This phone call is even more bananas because Warren actually starts telling serfbufo that they can’t refund the money that they had promised to refund in the beginning. This is because they banned his account, which was after the refunds were put into place originally. “Wait, hold on. I requested that account to be banned on September 1st. However, these refunds were on August 24th, so that shouldn’t have had anything to do with it.”

They also can’t unban the account for him, his ‘only option’ is to perform a chargeback from his bank account.

Serfbufo goes ahead with the charge back through his bank and Sony actually responds to it, saying that he is wrong. The whole PDF for Sony’s rebuttal can be found here. The claim was rejected by the bank, agreeing with Sony’s flawed logic.

Sony even closed his account. “Anyway, I decided to log in to my PSN account to see how things were faring on that front, and lo and behold, I couldn’t log in because my account had been banned. Despite Warren’s assurance that the chargeback banning would only apply to the sub-account. Despite Sony having disputed the chargeback and mindbogglingly succeeding. That wasn’t enough, so they closed my PSN account, which had tangible value in the form of previously purchased games.”

In the end, this is the conclusion posted, and let me tell you, this entire post is worth reading.

“Steaming, I call up my bank and explained the situation. My bank’s representative theorizes that the chargeback had been treated as “unauthorized charges” instead of “fraud”. I wasn’t sure what the difference was, but apparently unauthorized charges are when, say, a company overcharges for a service, or when you cancel a monthly subscription but they keep billing you. Fraud is when someone pretends to be you and uses that info to charge your card. This seems like clear-cut fraud to me.

As it stands now, I’m waiting for my bank to get back to me on re-filing the chargeback. All logic dictates that I should win, but if there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s that logic doesn’t matter.”

The entire situation is mind boggling, how a customer service could refuse to respond to someone who is treating them so nicely. We only see serfbufo’s temper flare in the third audio transcript, and at the point its to be expected. He even apologizes for the way he treats the representative.

This is by far one of the best ways to highlight the bureaucracy, and criminal nature of the companies that we support by purchasing their games.

Personal Air Conditioner

If you’re in the market for a personal air conditioner you might be interested in a new device that has been developed and created by Eugene Dubovoy called the Evapolar. The air conditioning device is capable of providing a number of features and functions including the ability to humidify and clean your local air.

The Evapolar personal air conditioner has been specifically designed to help you tailor your local microclimate to your exact needs by cooling and humidifying the air within your workspace or home environment.

Evapolar Personal Air Conditioner Specifications :

Personal Air Conditioner

Watch the promotional video below to learn more about this unique personal air conditioner that has taken to the Kickstarter crowdfunding website to raise just £30,000 over the next few weeks to make the jump into production. This developer explains more about its inspiration and construction.

Start enjoying eco-friendly and energy efficient evaporative climate technology right now with Evapolar! Create your personal microclimate and enjoy ultimate comfort exactly when you need it and where you need it! Evapolar works on power of water evaporation – the simplest and most efficient cooling technology since ancient times. Evaporative coolers already exist but you may have never heard about them – they are all very bulky and if your hot season is short they are not presented on your market at all. But Evapolar is not just another evaporative cooler. It received a number of upgrades that make it truly unique. And the main one is that we managed to make it both powerful and compact so you could put it on your table.

Evapolar is a desktop personal air conditioner that not only chills, but also humidifies and purifies air. Your personal climate created by Evapolar is healthy for your skin and hair. Thanks to its portability, Evapolar makes you feel comfortable exactly when you need it and where you need it. In order to make Evapolar both small and powerful we had to develop a special evaporative nanomaterial that was previously a part of Russian military tech. Evapolar emulates a soft natural chilling process instead of just producing a cold air thread like the other air conditioners (that often leads to catching a cold). Evapolar is absolutely eco-friendly and 12 times more energy efficient than traditional split systems. It is very easy to use and ready to work right out of the box.

For more information on the new Evapolar personal air conditioner jump over to the Kickstarter website for specifications and the ability to make a pledge from £124 to enable you to have more control over your microclimate.

PlayStation Network maintenance scheduled for August 17th

PlayStation Network maintenance scheduled for August 17th

Sony have announced another routine maintenance for Playstation Network.

Scheduled to take place on Monday, August 17th, at 9:30pm PDT and August 18th at 12:30am EDT / 5:30am GMT, the update will take approximately 90 – 120 minutes.

If you’re already signed in to PSN, you’ll still be able access your profile, games and entertainment applications, but account management, Playstation Video and Playstation Store purchases won’t be functional whilst the maintenance takes place.

Sony recommends users activate their PS4 as their primary console, if they haven’t already, before maintenance. The specific additions that the maintenance brings haven’t been detailed, but as usual they’re likely general improvements to the networks overall performance.

As usual regards the scheduled maintenance, Sony said “We thank you for your patience and support and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause”.

New KAISR Inflatable Air Lounger Inflates In 2 Seconds, Raises Over $890,000 Via Indiegogo (video)

Anyone looking for a more comfortable way to enjoy the outdoors while relaxing may be interested in the new inflatable air lounger called the KAISR which has been launched over on the Indiegogo crowdfunding website and has already raised over $890,000 thanks to over 5,600 backers.

KAISR Inflatable Lounger

The KAISR lounger can be inflated in just two seconds and provides a comfortable way for one person to lye out or up to 3 people to sit side-by-side in comfort on the beach, grass or anywhere you can think of.
Watch the video below to learn more about these supercool inflatable lounges which are constructed from high quality parachute material and can be assembled and collapsed in just a few seconds, making them easily portable. The design team behind the KAISR chair explain a little more.

We love to travel, hang out with friends and relax on the beach. But, we always hated the fact that we had to drag along those heavy beach chairs or spend the whole afternoon inflating air mattresses. The other option was just sitting on a towel on the (hard) ground. In 2014, we set our sights on completely changing the way people relax. We were fascinated by the simple technique of the dry bag. Together with an ultra-light air-tight fabric, the KAISR Original™ was born.

We tested it for a whole year, travelled the world and used it on the hardest conditions. Everyone LOVED it! And now we are ready to share it with YOU!

Samsung Entrim 4D Headphones Fools The Brain Into Thinking You Have Moved In Virtual Reality (video)

Samsung Entrim 4D Headphones Fools The Brain Into Thinking You Have Moved In Virtual Reality (video)

Samsung has this week unveiled a new pair of experimental headphones in the form of the Samsung Entrim 4D that it will be showcasing at SXSW 2016 which have been designed specifically for virtual reality applications and include technology that is capable of tricking your inner ear to thinking your body is physically moving.

Samsung Entrim 4D Headphones

Watch the video below to learn more about these new and unique Samsung Entrim 4D headphones which are sure to add another dimension to the ever-increasing range of virtual reality headsets that will be making their way to market this year for consumers to enjoy.

Samsung Entrim 4D Headphones

The Samsung Entrim 4D headphones use a technology known as Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation (GVS) which has been discussed for some time throughout the virtual reality community and is thought can possibly bridge the gap between visually and aurally induced psychological immersion. Samsung explains more :

Using a safe technique that sends electrical signals to the vestibular system in the ear, Entrim 4D synchronizes the body’s balance system with the changing movements in the VR videos. Users thus feel as if they are a part of the on-screen action, and can even sense direction and speed of movement.

Due to the early development stage that the headphones are currently in, no information on pricing or worldwide availability has been released as yet Samsung, but as soon as information comes to light we will keep you updated as always.

Julius "Zeekill" Kivimaki receives no prison time

Julius "Zeekill" Kivimaki receives no prison time

Julius “Zeekill” Kivimaki, a 17 year old affiliated with the hacking group Lizard Squad, has had an official ruling in regards to over 50,000 cyber crimes.

Julius “Zeekill” Kivimaki, a 17 year old affiliated with the hacking group Lizard Squad, has had an official ruling in regards to over 50,000 cyber crimes. Zeekill claims to have helped take down the Xbox Live and Playstation Network back in December.

Zeekill has been given 2 years of Suspended Sentence, and ordered to fight against cyber crime.

During the Christmas holidays, the DDoS attacks prevented users from accessing online services; for those bringing over old profiles, it prevented them from setting up their consoles at all.

Microsoft managed to get Xbox Live up within a few days, however Playstation Network only came up after Kim Dotcom paid off The Lizard Squad. Once the DDoS ran its course, Sony’s service was ready to be used once again.

Zeekill, who resides in Finland, has gotten off pretty easily considering how much he has done on the internet. Sky news interviewed him back in December, and the interview is worth checking out. Zeekill’s logic behind bringing down the service around Christmas time is interesting, to say the least.

Playstation Network was down again today

Playstation Network was down again today

The Playstation Network remains as unreliable as ever, the difference is Playstation 4 users are now paying to play online.

According to Gamespot, as of 4:22 PDT all services have been brought back online.

The Playstation Network has free online multiplayer for the Playstation 3 and PS Vita, but with the newest generation you must be subscribed to Playstation Plus+ to play almost all multiplayer games online.

Playstation Network experiences its fair share of extended down times. With the most memorable downtime in recent history being DDOS attacks by the Lizard Squad(that attacked both Xbox Live and Playstation Network).
But, who could forget 2011 great Playstation Network outage? The network was down for a grand total of 23 days when it happened.

That doesn’t excuse Sony for the recent unexpected downtimes, both last weekand today, especially with many of the online services now being a premium.

The Playstation Network was officially recognized as down at around 10:30 PDT, but it was reported on much earlier in the morning by many users.  Playstation also sent out a tweet this morning.

Engineers are investigating issues with the PSN connectivity; thanks for your patience. For latest status: http://t.co/HxwVJeJ2bW

— Ask PlayStation (@AskPlayStation) July 7, 2015

Thankfully, today the only effected services were the store and gaming/social aspects. A number of games had difficulty launching, but the Playstation Network team worked diligently to bring the servers back up in a timely manner.

VIE SHAIR Headphones Use Unique Air Frame To Provide Comfort And Sociability (video)

VIE SHAIR Headphones Use Unique Air Frame To Provide Comfort And Sociability (video)

Vie Style has created a very unique pair of headphones called the VIE SHAIR, that come equipped with a new feature called an Air Frame, which has been designed to keep the headphone pads away from your ears providing both comfort and a way to socially interact with your surroundings when required.

VIE SHAIR Headphones

The open-air, music-sharing headphone headphones can be equipped with either open or closed frame fittings offering you the ability to listen to audio privately if desired. Watch the video below to learn more about these unique headphones and their inspiration.

The developers of the VIE SHAIR headphones explain more about their construction and uses.

Traditional headphones are painful because they create pressure and generate heat. They’re also subtractive, in that they take you out of your environment, which makes communication difficult and awkward.

VIE SHAIR’s 3D molded air frame design floats the speaker just off your ear, and is extremely comfortable to wear. You can wear it with less stress and no sweat. It also allows you to interact with your environment while listening to your audio. When you want privacy, the open air frame easily converts to a closed air frame.

VIE is Bluetooth enabled. Its core audio technology comes from Yamaha’s advanced MACH-5 codec, and the large, directional flat speakers provide superior sound quality. and It can also broadcast audio to an unlimited number of VIE headsets. It’s a pain-free, safer and more social headphone.

The VIE SHAIR headphones project is currently over on the Kickstarter crowd funding website looking to raise $150,000 in pledges to make the jump from concept to production. So if you think the design of the VIE SHAIR headphones offers something you could benefit from, visit the Kickstarter website now to make a pledge from $199 and help VIE SHAIR headphones become a reality.
