The Harry Potter Question J.K. Rowling Really Wants People To Stop Asking

Harry Potter fans have a lot of questions for author J.K. Rowling, and she's always been generous with her answers, offering explanations and insights into her characters and books.

fans have a lot of questions for author J.K. Rowling, and she's always been generous with her answers, offering explanations and insights into her characters and books. But there’s one question in particular that Rowling has politely (or pleadingly) requested people stop asking. It relates to the Horcrux in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets .

By the hashtag included in J.K. Rowling’s recent Tweet, apparently, fans have frequently asked her why the Horcrux in Harry wasn’t destroyed in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Along with "the Horcrux wasn't destroyed in CoS because Harry didn't die #PleaseNeverAskMeThatAgainPlease" https://t.co/ih4QwuQncI

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) February 11, 2016

Why wasn’t the Horcrux in Harry destroyed in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets ? Because Harry didn't die.

I’m assuming the question stems from the fact that Harry is bitten by the Basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets, and since Basilisk venom is one of the rare magical substances that can destroy a Horcrux, perhaps fans wondered why the Horcrux in Harry’s head remained intact after he was bitten and nearly killed by the creature. Thanks to Fawkes’ tears, Harry survived the bite. And from what Rowling says, Harry would have needed to die in order for the Horcrux in his head to be destroyed.

It’s not on my personal list of questions related to the Harry Potter series, but apparently it’s come up enough that Rowling never wants to hear it again. She put two pleases in that hashtag, so she clearly means business. In general, the author doesn’t seem to mind answering questions about her books to her fans, but it sounds like she’s ready to hear some new ones.

harry

J.K. Rowling’s Tweet was in response to someone suggesting that she put #NotAPrequel in her Twitter bio, to avoid having to answer the same questions over and over. #NotAPrequel is a reference to the misconception that the upcoming stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is to be a prequel to the Harry Potter series. It’s not. It’s more of a sequel, serving as a followup to the Harry Potter books, and centering onHarry in his adult years, and his son, Severus Albus Potter.

J.K. Rowling’s been doing a fair amount of clarifying on her Twitter page of late. Following word, this week, that the script for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child would be published as a book, the author took to Twitter to make it clear to her fans that the book was not a novel, but a published version of the play’s script…

To be clear! The SCRIPT of #CursedChildis being published. #NotANovel #NotAPrequel https://t.co/3OhdOBIqJt

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) February 11, 2016
Pottermore’s initial announcement of the script book states that the anticipated West End stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child , is “officially the eighth story in Harry Potter canon.” The site also notes that the book being published later this year is the previews version of the stage production’s script. There are also plans to publish the final version of the script at a later date. So it’s not a novel, but it will give fans who can’t get to Londonto see the play the opportunity to experience the story as it was written.

A “Skin-walker” is a Native American legend about an evil witch or wizard who can transform themselves

into an animal. If that ability sounds familiar, you’ll remember the term animagus. Professor McGonagall, Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew and Harry Potter’s own father James were among the animagi featured in the Harry Potter books. Not all of them were evil, obviously, but it sounds like this ability had its own legend in North America. People thought skin-walkers sacrificed their own family members to gain the ability to transform into an animal. But in reality, most of them used this trait as a way to hunt for their tribe… or escape persecution.

Apple Car Being Worked On At Secret Lab In Germany

Apple Car Being Worked On At Secret Lab In Germany

We have heard rumors that the Apple Car is being worked in on California and now according to a new report, Apple also has a secret lab in Germany where it is working on its new vehicle.

Apple Car

The news comes from German website F.A.Z which says that Apple has a secret Apple Car lab in Berlin and the company has around 15 to 20 employees working on the vehicle at the lab.

The 15 to 20 employees are all apparently people from the German automotive industry that Apple has hired to work on their new car. This would make sense for Apple to hire people from the German car industry as they are renowned for making some of the best cars in the world.

The report also mentions that Apple’s car will be electric although the car may not come with a self driving feature at launch.

Apple will apparently contract Magna Steyr’s Austrian arm to build their electric vehicle, the project is rumored to be code named Project Titan at Apple.

Previous rumors have suggested that Apple’s first car will launch some time in 2020, it is not clear as yet on when the exact launch date of the vehicle will be.

Asus ZenBook UX303UB Review

Asus ZenBook UX303UB Review

Asus is underrated as a laptop manufacturer, but it has some of the most interesting models available right now.

Asus ZenBook UX303UB Review

Asus is underrated as a laptop manufacturer, but it has some of the most interesting models available right now. We absolutely loved the Asus ZenBook UX305Fultrabook last year, mostly for its slimness and power, but also for its low price. It seemed as though Asus had made some fairly intelligent choices, cutting flab where necessary but ultimately delivering a solid product with a clear target audience.

While the UX305 series was designed to be slim above all else, its sibling, the UX303 series offers a little more power in a slightly thicker body. Both models have just received refreshes with Intel's sixth-generation Core i and Core m processors, and the UX303 also gets Nvidia's current-gen graphics.

asus_ux303UB_open_ndtv.jpg

More choice is always a good thing, so we spent some time with the recently launched ZenBook UX303UBto see if it matches up to its sibling's pedigree, and if this different balance of design and power makes a huge difference.

Look and feel
While not as slim as its "MacBook Air killer" sibling, this is still a very portable laptop. It's just under 20mm thick and weighs 1.45kg. It's available in Smoky Brown and Icicle Gold, and we have the latter for review, which we found just a little gaudy. The lid has Asus' trademark concentric ring pattern, but the finish is totally smooth and not textured.

As far as build quality goes, we're happy with what we see. You can lift the lid with one finger and the base stays put. The screen doesn't flex and the hinge feels pretty solid. The screen frame is the only part of the UX303UB that feels less than perfectly solid, and there are minor ripples when it is pressed hard.

asus_ux303UB_left_ndtv.jpg

There are two USB 3.0 ports and an exposed SD card slot on the left, and another USB 3.0 port on the right along with a full-sized HDMI port, a Mini-DisplayPort, a 3.5mm audio socket, and the DC power inlet - pretty impressive for a slim laptop. Even better, Asus throws in one USB-to-Ethernet adapter, and one Mini-DP-to-VGA adapter. The speakers are on the bottom overhang, firing downwards, so they sound better when there's a flat surface to reflect off.

Opening the lid reveals a fairly spacious keyboard and trackpad. The keyboard layout is the same as what we saw on the UX305FA, and we quite liked it when we used it then. It feels a little mushier, and the power button in the upper right corner is easier to hit accidentally, but on the other hand there's a backlight this time which is always welcome.

asus_ux303UB_sleeve_ndtv.jpg

You get a pretty nice cloth sleeve in the box, along with a Velcro cable tie, a microfibre cloth, and the aforementioned dongles. The sleeve doesn't have room for the laptop's charger, which isn't too big but is a slightly awkward shape.

Specifications and software
It's important to note that Asus sells notebooks in India which have the same names and model numbers as those in other regions, but with vastly different specifications. The company has trimmed features here and there, most likely in order to keep prices down, but the side effect is that a lot of noteworthy hardware has been stripped from the version of the UX303UB that sells here. The 3200x1800-pixel touchscreen common across variants selling in other markets has been downgraded, the SSD has been replaced by mechanical storage, and there's only a single variant with a single CPU option.

asus_ux303UB_lid_ndtv.jpg

While it isn't quite what you'd get elsewhere, the Indian UX303B is not a huge disappointment, especially considering its price. The processor is a sixth-generation Intel Core-i5 6200U, which has two physical cores running at up to 2.8GHz. There's 8GB of RAM and it appears that 4GB is soldered to the motherboard but the other 4GB is a standard SODIMM module that can be replaced. Asus has done this with a few other modelsas well, and while it does impose limitations if you're trying to upgrade, at least it isn't impossible.

There's only mechanical storage, which is a bit of a disappointment in terms of speed but at least you get 1TB of drive space. The display resolution is 1920x1080 which is decent for a 13-inch laptop, but not as crisp as other high-end laptops with high-DPI panels. There's no touch input, though not everyone will miss that - the benefit is a matte screen which doesn't reflect all kinds of light. Wireless connectivity comes in the form of Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 4.0.

asus_ux303UB_profile_ndtv.jpg

Software
Asus ships the UX303UB with a 64-bit edition of Windows 10 Home, and quite a few pre-installed programs in addition to the obligatory Microsoft Office trial. McAfee LiveSafe and Dropbox both throw up enormous pop-ups demanding that you register, and there's also Asus's own Webstorage and Live Update tools which display alerts from time to time. Asus' Splendid is a utility that offers three presets and a manual slider to control screen colour temperature, and Smart Gesture replicates the entire Windows control panel for touchpad controls and also lets you hook up to an Android app which lets you use your smartphone as a wireless trackpad.

There's also WPS Office, Evernote, Flipboard, Twitter, TripAdvisor, Cyberlink PowerDirector and PhotoDirector, Gameloft Games Store, WildTangent Games, and Asus' Giftbox storefront. If all that wasn't enough, there are also Start menu tiles for Photoshop Express, Minecraft and Candy Crush Soda Saga, which are actually links to their respective entries in the Windows Store.

asus_zenbook_ux303UB_dropbox_ndtv.jpg

Windows 10 is set up with 150 percent UI scaling by default. This might help when you have a touchscreen, but it also makes everything look a bit cartoonish. Not only does this result in less usable screen space, but it also causes older software (including quite a few legacy Windows tools) to look stretched and distorted. We were happy to scale back to 100 percent which looked fine to us considering the screen size and resolution, but you might also be happy with 125 percent.

Performance
We had no major complaints with the UX303UB other than the intrusive software popups. The screen is bright and evenly lit, and sound from the speakers was usually good enough. The keyboard is a bit mushier than we would have liked but the layout is superb and nothing has been left off to favour design over usability. We also found the trackpad more than spacious enough, with decent sensitivity.

asus_ux303UB_dongles_ndtv.jpg

In terms of hardware, the Asus ZenBook UX303UB is certainly on the premium side, though it doesn't quite cut it as a high-performance machine. It has the same GPU as the gaming-oriented HP Omen and more mainstream Acer Aspire V3-574G-77X8, and its CPU falls between the Core i7 and Core i3 in those two models respectively. We still ran some of our more demanding tests to see just how much performance can be squeezed out of this sleek laptop.

PCMark's Home and Work tests gave us 2,589 and 2,592 points respectively, which seemed a little on the low side compared to the Core M powered UX305FA. However, the POVRay trace time of 7 minutes, 27 seconds and the Cinebench score of 287 made up for that nicely, showing strong CPU performance. SiSoft SANDRA showed us quite plainly that the mechanical hard drive was less than one fifth as fast as the UX305FA's SSD, but on the other hand memory bandwidth and general multimedia performance was much better.

asus_zenbook_ux303UB_lastlight_ndtv.jpg

Of course, the primary difference between the two siblings is the fact that the new UX303UB has a discrete GPU. 3DMark Fire Strike gave us 1,379 points overall and Fire Strike Extreme managed a score of 698. Unigine Valley ran at an average of 16.7fps at 1920x1080 with the settings at High and AA turned off, which means slightly older games should do quite well without too many compromises.

We tried Tomb Raider (2013) which isn't a very demanding game, and were able to have a pleasant experience with the settings turned down. The internal benchmark showed an average of 19.9fps with the minimum dropping only to 15.5fps, which is fairly consistent, with the resolution set to 1080 and the quality set to High. Gameplay was much smoother with this turned down, but the game was still enjoyable. Similarly, Metro: Last Light Redux's average frame rate was 9.91 at 1080 using the Medium quality preset and most effects set to Normal. You'll have to lose some of them for a playable framerate.

asus_zenbook_ux303UB_farcry_ndtv.jpg

We also did a free run through Far Cry 4 with everything set to Low. The average framerate of 20fps was obviously less than ideal, but the main problem was the uneven frame pacing which could be seen as choppiness as we ran across the landscape. It's obvious that while the Asus ZenBook UX303UB has a reasonably powerful GPU, this alone does not make it a hardcore gaming machine. You will have to have low expectations in terms of the kind of games you can run and the quality you'll experience. We'd suggest sticking to much more casual titles.

The UX303UB's fans spin up audibly when the laptop is being stressed, and the lower half of the keyboard deck under our wrists did get fairly warm. However, we found that it was cool and unobtrusive most of the time. Battery Eater Pro ran for 2 hours, 10 minutes before the UX303UB shut itself down automatically, which isn't really impressive. We'd expect that casual work and Web surfing wouldn't hurt battery life too much, but you'll need to be plugged in for anything else.

asus_ux303UB_box_ndtv.jpg

Verdict
Asus gives us two options here: the UX305 series is portable at the cost of all else, but it does a fantastic job of what it's meant to. On the other hand, the UX303 tries to give buyers both portability and power, but balanced out at the most reasonable cost possible. That kind of compromise might work for a lot of people, and it doesn't hurt at all that the UX303UB looks and feels fantastic. If you're the adventurous type, you could also swap out the UX303UB's hard drive for an SSD and bump up the RAM - even if you only think you might want an upgrade a few years down the line, at least it's possible.

If you're looking to spend around Rs. 70,000 on a laptop, you'll find that both siblings are excellent options. It ultimately comes down to what you prioritise the most. We do wish that Asus would at least offer options for the kind of hardware it sells outside India, even if the price is high.

The Pencil iPad Stand

The Pencil iPad Stand

Some of our readers will remember the Pencil iPhone stand that I made last year, I have had my iPad for a few weeks now and I thought it was about time to create a similar stand for the iPad.

Pencil iPad Stand

This one took a bit more figuring out over the original Pencil iPhone standas the iPad is obviously larger, I needed to come up with a slightly different design that would hold the iPad safely and firmly.

Pencil iPad Stand

To make your own Pencil iPad stand you will need a total of six pencils and four elastic bands, this time I have used pencils with erasers to provide friction and protection when touching the iPad and to provide grip for the stand legs.

pencil ipad stand

The ferrule metal connectors that hold the eraser to the pencil  provide great locator’s for the edge of the iPad and work like a dream, providing just enough friction to keep the iPad in either landscape or portrait orientation. Please note the metal on the pencils may scratch your iPad edges if not in a case.

pencil ipad standIf you are worried about the metal scratching your new iPad without using a case, just extend the two pencils until you have plenty of wood to rest your iPad on, or wrap a little tape around the metal on each to protect the edge of your iPad.

pencil ipad stand

Personally I think the new iPad pencil stand is more practical than the Pencil iPhone StandI created last year, and keeps the iPad in a much more positive and secure position.

AAduino Tiny Arduino Based Development Board

AAduino Tiny Arduino Based Development Board

Arduino enthusiasts looking for a super small Arduino-based development board may be interested in the AAduino, which takes the form of an Arduino clone that is the same size as a AA battery.

AAduino Tiny Arduino Based Development Board

The AAduino board measures just 44.9 x 13.8 mm and is equipped with a Atmel ATmega328P micro-controller with 32KB of flash memory together with 1024B of EEPROM, and 2KB SRAM.

Its creator Johan Kanflo has down clocked the processor from 20 MHz to 8 MHz to save on voltage and added a unique way to add power to the tiny Arduino development board by including the connections directly onto the board allowing you to insert it into a AA battery holder with ease.

AAduino Tiny Arduino Based Development Board-1

Kanflo explains more about the inspiration behind the tiny Arduino development board and more about its features and functionality.

I have been using Nathan Chantrell’s Tiny328 for quite some time as my swiss army knife ISM radio node. Now I wanted a more slim ISM node as my setup with a Tiny328 on a breadboard is not very “deployable”.

The AAduino is an wireless Arduino clone the size of an AA battery with Keystone battery terminals rotated 180° to act as positive and negative terminals. It is powered by an ATMega328p and is fitted with an RFM69C companion. There is room for two DS18B20 temperature sensors and an indicator LED.

It runs at 8Mhz to allow for greater life span since the CPU can run at a lower voltage. I have fused the 328 to brown out at 1.7V which is a bit out of spec at 8Mhz and slightly below what the RFM69C needs. Running at 4Mhz would be more suitable but I will see how well the node performs when the batteries are draining out.

For more information on the new AAduino Arduino based board jump over to the Johan Kanflo website for details following the link below.

Why It's Time To Say Goodbye To Xbox 360, According To Xbox

Why It's Time To Say Goodbye To Xbox 360, According To Xbox

Just today, Xbox made a major announcement that has been quickly sweeping across the gaming community.

made a major announcement that has been quickly sweeping across the gaming community. For those who have invested most of their gaming careers on their Xbox360 and still have yet to upgrade to an XboxOne, you might want to jumpstart that decision sooner rather than later. Because Xbox announced today that they have decided to cease production of the Xbox360.

The news comes from head of XboxPhil Spencer himself via the Xbox Wire blog. The Xbox 360 had just recently turned 10-years old and was a console that defined a generation, from its notable franchises like Gears Of War to the growth it provided the Halo series.

Spencer commented on why they had decided to cease production of the Xbox 360 saying, While we've had an amazing run, the realities of manufacturing a product over a decade old are starting to creep up on us. Which is why we have made the decision to stop manufacturing new Xbox 360 consoles. We will continue to sell existing inventory of Xbox 360 consoles, with availability varying by country.
Even though the production of the console will be stopped, that doesn't mean Microsoft is going to completely shut down all services on the Xbox 360. Players will still be able to use Xbox Live on the console, buy Xbox 360 games from the Xbox store while supplies last, obtain Xbox 360 support and of course enjoy the backwards compatible games on the Xbox One.

While I don’t really play Xbox consoles anymore (though I have seriously considered an Xbox One), the Xbox 360 is really where I got back into gaming in college after falling out of it in high school. I was playing Call Of Duty online with my friends and we’d throw Halo parties. I found my gaming niche again through the Xbox 360 and if it hadn’t been for that Halo Reach special edition Xbox 360, I might not have gotten back into gaming at all—who knows. While it’s sad to see the 360 go, it’s nice to be able to focus on the advancements currently happening in the gaming industry, like virtual reality. I respect Xbox for taking initiative to put all of their focus on current projects like the Xbox One, which honestly hasn’t been able to beat out the PS4 yet. Who knows, maybe they are working on some mysterious VR headset comparable to the PlayStation VR. Now that would be something to really look forward to.

At the end of the blog post, Phil Spencer noted they would be bringing some updates on their game plans for the Xbox One and Windows 10, so while you mourn the loss of a another classic console, just know there are better and brighter things ahead.

3:35 a.m. Johnny Tsunami
At first, I was a little weirded out about why Disney might choose to air a bunch of sequels on the first day. I mean really? While we are all fond of Halloweentown II it’s a little weird to kick off with that one instead of the original. And if you are going by popularity—although Lemonade Mouth was where it was at a few short years ago—then you would think High School Musical would rank a bit higher on this list, as would Brink . It generally looks like they’ve sprinkled some of the most popular titles in with some movies that did pretty well, although a lot of DCOM titles did not make this list. (Here’s looking at you Stepsister From Planet Weird .)

Still, there are a lot of gems to choose from. A lot of these movies featured actors and actresses who went on to do even greater things. The Even Stevens movie starred Shia Labeouf, who later watched itduring an epic marathon of his own. Cadet Kelly featured an early performance from Hilary Duff. Raven-Symone is sprinkled all over this marathon, appearing in the Zenon movies and The Cheetah Girls . High School Musical helped Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale. Plus, Smart House randomly features Katey Sagal and Halloweentown is all about Debbie Reynolds. You can play spot the famous person in a lot of these.

Not quite jazzed, yet? That's okay, just remember the DCOM movies even spawned some great musical moments. I wouldn't be the person I am if I didn't include this gem:

The TV season is wrapping up on the major networks and a lot of the cable channels. By the end of May, TV won't have a lot of new episodes airing, although there is some good stuff coming upthis summer. With that in mind, you could do worse than a DCOM marathon. Because being normal is vastly overrated...

It seems that Sony is finally beefing up security on the PlayStation Network.

Sony is planning to add two-factor authentication to the PlayStation Network, Sony confirmed to Polygon. “In order to further safeguard our users and their accounts, we are preparing to offer a 2-step verification feature,” a Sony representative stated. The spokesperson did not give a time frame, only saying that “more details will be shared at a later date.”

The PlayStation 3’s firmware was updated to version 4.80 yesterday. Users noticed that if they entered the wrong login information, the system mentioned two-step verification. This feature is not currently available on PlayStation Network accounts. Those accounts are tied to a number of platforms, including the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and the PlayStation mobile app.

Two-factor authentication is a process that requires users to enter two different factors when logging into a service. Usually this means “something you know” (your login details) as well as a second piece of information from your phone. This is typically a six-digit code generated by a mobile app or received in a text message. After you sign in with your login information, you must also type in the second code in order to complete the login process. Two-factor authentication is much more secure than a password alone, as it means that a hacker would also need your phone in order to access your account.

Sony’s confirmation of adding two-factor authentication comes five years after a major hack of the PlayStation Network. The attack forced Sony to shut down the PlayStation Network for 23 days as they rebuilt the network to bring it back online.

Apple Hires Former Tesla VP For Apple Car

Apple Hires Former Tesla VP For Apple Car

Earlier this week we heard that Apple may have a secret lab for the Apple Car in Germany and now Apple has hired a former Tesla VP to work on their new Project Titan car project.

Apple Car

According to a recent report by Electrek, Apple has hired former Tesla VP of Vehicle Engineering Chris Porritt, who will now be working on special projects at Apple.

Chris Porrit is also a former Chief Engineer at luxury car maker Aston Martin and he is expected to take charge of the Apple Car project as the previous head of the project, Steve Zadesky is rumored to have now left Apple.

Apple are expected to launch their first vehicle in either 2020 or 2021, the car is said to be a fully electric vehicle. The company has been working on the project in California in the US and there have been rumors that the vehicle has was in development in the US since last year.

As we heard earlier in the week Apple has a new secret lab in Germany which has between 15 and 20 emloyees, these employees are said to all be experts from the German car industry.

It makes sense for Apple to also develop its vehicle in Germany as the company has a long history of producing high quality cars from the likes of BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi and more.

New Rainbow Six Siege DLC To Be Announced On Friday

New Rainbow Six Siege DLC To Be Announced On Friday

It’s been some time since the first DLC for Rainbow Six Siege was released.

rainbowIt’s been some time since the first DLC for Rainbow Six Siege was released. Fans are eagerly awaiting the next one. Ubisoft hasn’t provided any updates for the next planned DLC for this title, but today it was confirmed that the second DLC will be announced on Friday.

It’s about time. This will please everyone who has been getting a bit nervous waiting.

Post-launch plans had the second DLC arriving in April, and the month is almost over. So I guess there is no need to worry after all. Then again, it could be that the second DLC is going to miss its release window of April. After all, the first Rainbow Six Siege DLC titled Operation Black Ice also missed its release window in January earlier this year.

Either way Ubisoft will give us all of the details on Friday. Ubisoft will announce the second DLC for Rainbow Six Siege in a special segment during the Pro League live stream that’s scheduled for this Friday on Twitch. It’s good to know that they have not forgotten about fans. Friday is right around the corner. Hopefully they will give all of the details so we know what to expect from this DLC.

China to Launch 'Core Module' for Space Station Around 2018

China to Launch 'Core Module' for Space Station Around 2018

China will launch a "core module" for its first space station some time around 2018, a senior official told the state-run Xinhua news agency on Thursday, part of a plan to have a permanent manned space station in service around 2022.

China to Launch 'Core Module' for Space Station Around 2018

Advancing China's space programme is a priority for Beijing, with President Xi Jinping calling for the country to establish itself as a space power, and apart from its civilian ambitions Beijing has tested anti-satellite missiles.

China insists its space programme is for peaceful purposes, but the US Defense Department has highlighted its increasing space capabilities, saying it was pursuing activities aimed to prevent adversaries from using space-based assets in a crisis.

The "core module" for the space station would be called the " Tianhe-1", the Chinese word for galaxy or Milky Way, Wang Zhongyang, spokesman for the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp, told Xinhua.

"Two space labs will be launched later and dock with the core module, Tianhe-1," he said. "The construction of the space station is expected to finish in 2022."

It gave no details of what the "core module" would consist.

"If the International Space Station, which has extended its service, is retired by 2024, China's new space station will be the only operational one in outer space," Wang added.

In a manned space mission in 2013, three Chinese astronauts spent 15 days in orbit and docked with an experimental space laboratory, the Tiangong (Heavenly Palace) 1.

This year, China will launch the Tiangong 2 and Shenzhou 11 spacecraft, which will carry two astronauts and dock with Tiangong 2, Xinhua added.

Next year, China's first cargo ship, Tianzhou 1, will attempt to dock with Tiangong 2, it said.

China also plans a space telescope similar to the Hubble Space Telescope, which will "be on a separate space unit and share orbit alongside the space station", Wang added.

Xinhua, in a separate report, said China was also working on its own reusable rocket technologies and has already built a prototype model.

"The experiment has laid solid foundation for the realisation of reusable rockets in the country," an unnamed source told Xinhua.

China has been moving to develop its space programme for military, commercial and scientific purposes, but is still playing catch-up to established space powers the United States and Russia.

China's Jade Rabbit moon rover landed on the moon in late 2013 to great national fanfare, but soon began experiencing severe technical difficulties.

The Jade Rabbit and the Chang'e 3 probe that carried it there marked the first "soft landing" on the moon since 1976. Both the United States and the Soviet Union had accomplished the feat earlier.

Xiaomi Sold 14.8 Million Handsets This Quarter, Says an Analyst

Xiaomi is one of the most popular smartphone brands globally with strong presence not just in China but in India as well.

Xiaomi Mi5

Xiaomi is one of the most popular smartphone brands globally with strong presence not just in China but in India as well. The company managed to sell around 70 million smartphones last year, and analyst has released some numbers for the performance of the Chinese manufacturer for this year.

According to IHS Technology’s analyst Kevin Wang, Xiaomi managed to sell 14.8 million smartphones in the first quarter of 2016. This number also includes the sales of the company in other markets where it operates as well

Last year, the sales number in the first quarter was quite close to this figure, and it should rise in the coming months as the company recently launched its latest flagship device, the Xiaomi Mi5, as well as other Redmi 3 smartphones as well.

These are not the only devices, the company is also expected to introduce a few more handsets in the coming months, including the Xiaomi Note 2 in the second half of the year.

Xiaomi devices are quite limited to a few key markets at the moment. The launch of the handsets in other markets in the coming month can definitely help the company boost its sales, and try to take their spot back from Huawei, which surpassed it in terms of smartphone sales.

Apple Confirms It Refused China’s Requests For Its Source Code

There have been rumors in the past that Apple may have collaborated with the Chinese government, although these have been just rumors and no solid evidence has been revealed.

Apple Source Code

Apple has now put these rumors to bed by confirming that they have denied requests by the Chinese government for Apple’s source code.

Apple’s general counsel Bruce Sewell has now confirmed that the company did recieve requests for their source code from the Chinese government, but Apple has not given them the code, you can see his statement below.

“We have not provided source code to the Chinese government. We did not have a key 19 months ago that we threw away,” Sewell said. “Those allegations are without merit.”

Previously Apple has kept quiet about the rumors surrounding them and the Chinese government, China is a massive market for Apple.

Encryption and data privacy has become more of a prominent issue over the last few months, especially with the recent case between the FBI and Apple over the San Bernardino iPhone.

A number of other companies are also looking to improve their encryption to protect user data, this includes, Facebook, Google and others, Facebook owned WhatsApp recently turned on end to end encryption on their messaging service.

Scientists Create Battery Powered By Pee

Scientists Create Battery Powered By Pee

Scientists at the University of Bath have developed a battery or miniature fuel cell that is powered by pee and the device is designed to be low cost and expected to be between £1 and £2.

Battery Powered By Pee

The scientists worked with the Queen Mary University in London and the Bristol Bioenergy Centre to create a microbial fuel cell that is powered by urine.

This novel fuel cell developed by the researchers, measures one inch squared in size and uses a carbon catalyst at the cathode which is derived from glucose and ovalbumin, a protein found in egg white. This biomass-derived catalyst is a renewable and much cheaper alternative to platinum, commonly used in other microbial fuel cells.

The researchers worked on the cell’s design to maximize the power that could be generated. By increasing the cell’s electrodes from 4mm to 8mm, the power output was increased tenfold. Furthermore, by stacking multiple units together, the power was proportionally increased.

The pee powered fuel cell can generate 2 watts per cubic metre, this is enough to power a mobile phone, the researchers are working on improving the efficiency of the device.

You can find out more details about this tiny pee powered fuel cell at the link below, the device could be used in developing countries to provide power.

LeEco Le 2, Le 2 Pro, Le Max 2 Impressions

LeEco Le 2, Le 2 Pro, Le Max 2 Impressions

Highlights
The differences between the three are all essentially under the hood.

LeEco Le 2, Le 2 Pro, Le Max 2 Impressions

The trio forsake 3.5mm audio jacks in favour of USB Type-C ports. All three run Android 6.0 Marshmallow under LeEco's EUI 5.5.

Unveiled at an event in Beijing this week, they're all similarly designed slabs of metal with thin bezels along with the fingerprint scanners in the same spot on the back that we've seen with the LeEco Le 1s. The only obvious difference is that the Le Max 2is a 5.7-inch phone versus the 5.5-inch Le 2and Le 2 Pro. The trio forsake 3.5mm audio jacks in favour of pushing audio through their USB Type-C ports, using the what company is calling Continual Digital Lossless Audio (CDLA) technology. This, according to LeEco, will deliver a high-quality lossless audio experience. Furthermore, all three models run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow wrapped under LeEco's customised EUI 5.5 (short for Ecosystem User Interface).

With a familiar, established aesthetic and design language, the differences between the three phones are all essentially under the hood. The Le 2 features MediaTek's tri-cluster deca-core Helio X20 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. The Le 2 is equipped with a 16-megapixel rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture, phase-detection autofocus, and an LED flash. There's also an 8-megpixel front-facing camera.

There's a version of the Le 2 Pro powered by the same Helio X20 processor, but also one powered by the deca-core Helio X25 SoC. Both are paired with 4GB of RAM, and have 32GB of storage. The Le 2 Pro has a 21-megapixel rear camera and a front-facing 8-megapixel unit. Both, the Le 2 and the Le 2 Pro have full-HD screens, 3,000mAh batteries with fast charging, and Wi-Fi 802.11ac, 4G LTE, and VoLTE for connectivity.

As the name suggest, the Le Max 2 has more to boast of than the other two. There's a 5.7-inch QHD display with a resolution of 1440x2560, and a Snapdragon 820 processor. Three versions were announced: one with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage; one with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage; and one with a whopping 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The battery is bigger than those of the Le 2 and Le 2 Pro, albeit by a mere 100mAh.

( Also see : Le 2 vs Le 1)

In our brief time with the phones, we found them to be well crafted. Their metal unibodies are easy to grip. Each phone appeared to work as it should, be it opening webpages, firing up LeEco's bespoke video apps, taking pictures, or using the fingerprint sensor. There's very little by which to tell one phone apart from the others - well, at least when it comes to the usual tasks. Even in terms of Bluetooth transfer speeds, it was impossible to tell the difference, they were all equally and unusually slow. Transferring around 15MB of data took the better part of half an hour. It will be interesting to see if this remains true when we put these phones through our benchmark test suite.

leeco_le_2_side_ndtv.jpg

Although LeEco claims a perceptible bump in audio output quality thanks to its new CDLA tech, the crowded, noisy environment of the launch event made it tough to come to any conclusions on this just yet. At the moment there's no indication of whether or not the CDLA headphones or earphones will be bundled with the phones in India.

( Also see : Le 2 Pro vs Le 1 Pro)

As for the EUI skin, it didn't feel too dissimilar from what we saw on the Le 1s. At the launch event, the Le 2 demo units were running on Android 5.0, the Le Pro 2 on Android 6.0, and the Le Max 2 on Android6.0.1. However, EUI ensured that we couldn't tell any of them apart, even from the older Le 1s. There's the lack of an app drawer, a wide variety of toggle options, and a range of interactivity options between apps. The latter is a function of LeEco's strengths as a content company. You can watch videos, follow celebrities and book tickets for shows via its suite of apps. Doing so allows one to talk to another, for example, booking a ticket for a concert automatically creates a reminder in the phone's calendar app.

leeco_le_2_top_ndtv.jpg

In addition to launching new hardware, LeEco founder Jia Yueting stressed on leveraging different verticals such as content, hardware, and the cloud to create a coherent ecosystem. This means a unified interface across devices - be it a 55-inch TV (which was also launched at the event) or the LeSee smartcar, LeEco hardware will sport the same look and feel. Over and above this are the firm's content offerings which are intended to help build a sense of cohesion, and more importantly, provide a large chunk of its revenue. This is such an important piece of LeEco's strategy that it also unveiled the latest feature of its video streaming service, which allows users to watch up to nine sports games at a time, or a single game from nine different angles.

( Also see : Le Max 2 vs Le Max)

However, all of this is true only in China right now. The company is looking to make an aggressive content play in India, but until that happens, LeEco's vision isn't exactly the be-all, end-all utopia that LeEco would like us to believe it is.

leeco_le_2_bottom_ndtv.jpg

There's no solid release date of these phones for India yet, though we suspect that they will be released within the first half of this year. As for LeEco's content distribution plans, it has tied up with Eros and Yupp TV, and set up CDNs in Bengaluru and Delhi. With an announcement scheduled for May 3, we wouldn't be surprised to see more information on its partnerships and developments on this front soon.

But until all of this comes into play, the Le 2, Le 2 Pro, and Le Max 2 are more of the same from a company whose debut efforts in the country were met with a tremendous response. Will there be more to them? You'll have to wait for our full review to find out.

Disclosure: LeEco paid for the correspondent's flights and accommodation to attend its Beijing launch event.

How Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them Is Affected By Its American Setting, According To Dan Fogler

How Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them Is Affected By Its American Setting, According To Dan Fogler

On beyond the key characters and regular battles with Voldemort, one key thing separates the story of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them from the rest of the Harry Potter franchise: its setting.

franchise: its setting. Unlike the Modern England-set series, the latest film is not only set in America, but even transports audiences back in time to the 1920s. It makes the upcoming David Yates-directed movie significantly different from everything that’s come before it, and according to co-star Dan Fogler, it has the effect of massively expanding the magic universe that Harry Potter opened.

I had the pleasure of quickly chatting with the Tony Award-winning actor about his role in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them last week at CinemaCon – the annual convention held in Las Vegas for theater owners – and he had some very interesting things to say about the importance of the new fantasy movie’s setting. I asked about what made the American location of the story significant within the Harry Potter sphere, and he explained that it’s really about widening the scope of the world and being able to show sides of it that have been completely unexplored at this point. Said Fogler,
Well, Potter films are so very deliciously British, and now bringing it to New York, bringing it to America, suddenly it expands the universe ten-fold where there are characters coming back from the war – now it’s a global thing. It just makes it that much more of a larger machine, and I think that people who are just fans of the movies are going to be excited to see that there’s so much more to see now.
We’re still months away from the release of, but already we know of certain institutions and terms that we wouldn’t have learned about without the expansion to American shores. For example, the movie will bring us deep into the world of the Magical Congress of the United States of America, and it’s been revealed that the U.S. doesn’t have the term “ muggle,” but instead “ No-Maj” as a way to describe those without access to magic. Surely this is also just the tip of the iceberg.

Set in 1926, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them follows the adventures of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a wizard and creature expert who travels from England to New York in order to attend a meeting with the MACUSA. He brings with him a magical briefcase full of all kinds of dangerous “beasts”, but finds himself in serious trouble when they all manage to escape – leading Newt to be hunted by authorities and the entire wizarding world to be put in danger.

Be sure to stay tuned for plenty more updates onin the coming weeks and months, and get excited for the film’s release on November 18th.

LeEco Le 2, Le 2 Pro, and Le Max 2 Smartphones Without 3.5mm Headphone Jack Launched

The Le 2 and Le 2 Pro are powered by deca-core MediaTek SoCs. The Le Max 2 is powered by the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC.

China-based tech firm LeEco on Wednesday took the wraps off its three new next-generation smartphones at a launch event in China. Called the Le Max 2, Le 2, and Le 2 Pro, the smartphones are the successors to the Le Max, Le 1, and Le 1 Pro smartphones launched last year.

The company says these three smartphones are the world's first to forgo a typical 3.5mm headphone jack and instead feature USB Type-C audio connector. The metal-clad handsets unveiled in an event in Beijing run Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box with Emotion UI 5.6.01 skin on top. The three smartphones will also be compatible with the VR headset the company introduced at the same event, set to launch in China in May.

The three smartphones are now available to pre-order from the company's China site. The Le Max 2 has been priced at CNY 2099 (roughly Rs. 21,500), CNY 2,299 (roughly Rs. 23,500), and CNY 2,499 (roughly Rs. 25,600), for the 4GB RAM+32GB storage, 4GB RAM+64GB storage, and 6GB RAM+64GB storage variants respectively. The Le 2 on the other hand, has been priced at CNY 1,099 (roughly Rs. 11,200). Finally, the Le 2 Pro has been priced at CNY 1,399 (roughly Rs. 14,300) for the Helio X20 variant, and CNY 1,499 (roughly Rs. 15,300) for the Helio X25 variant.

The LeEco Le Max 2 features a 5.7-inch QHD (1440x2560 pixels) resolution bezel-less display with a pixel density of 515ppi. Under-the-hood it packs the flagship 64-bit quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, clubbed with a massive 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM (in its top model) and Adreno 530 GPU.

( Also see : Le Max 2 vs Le Max)

The smartphone sports a 21-megapixel Sony sensor rear camera along with an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. Its 3100mAh battery also supports Qualcomm Quick Charging 3.0 technology. On the connectivity front, the Le Max 2 supports 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, A-GPS, and Micro-USB Type-C connectivity. 64GB of inbuilt storage (in its top model) is also housed inside the handset.

leeco_le_max_ndtv.jpg

As compared to the previously launched Le Max, the Le Max 2 excels when it comes to RAM, front-facing camera pixel count, and the processor. However, the display size and the battery capacity have seen some compromises.

( Also see : Le 2 vs Le 1)

The LeEco Le 2 houses a smaller 5.5-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) resolution bezel-less display with a pixel density of 403ppi. It is powered by the deca-core MediaTek Helio X20 processor clocked at 2.3GHz, clubbed with 3GB of RAM and Mali GPU.

The smartphone features a 16-megapixel rear camera along with an 8-megapixel front-facing camera, and also houses 32GB of inbuilt storage. The Le 2 is powered by a 3000mAh battery and supports the same connectivity options as the Le Max 2. The Le 2 edges over the Le 1 in terms of processor, camera, inbuilt storage, and battery.

( Also see : Le 2 Pro vs Le 1 Pro)

Lastly, the LeEco Le 2 Pro features almost the same display as the Le 2 (except it bears a visible bezel), same front-facing camera pixel count, same inbuilt storage, and the same connectivity options. However, since it's the 'Pro' version, the handset sports a 21-megapixel rear camera, choice of a deca-core MediaTek Helio X20 SoC or a deca-core MediaTek Helio X25 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 4GB of RAM, and a 3000mAh battery with its own fast charging technology. The smartphone trumps its predecessor in the OS version, camera, and processor departments.

The company at the event also showcased its autonomous car prototype, LeSee. The company said the LeSee concept car encompasses a unique "Internet" design, with a large and flamboyant LED screen. In a press statement, the company said, "This concept car mainly takes on the idea of 'inter-connection"; not only does it have fully-automatic driving functions, it can also learn on its own, with facial recognition, emotion recognition, system recognition and path recognition."

LeEco's founder Jia Yueting with Le Supercar's co-founder, the global deputy president Ding Lei, revealed the first model of the concept car.  The global rollout for the LeSee is slated for 2018.

leeco_lesee.jpg In response to a question about how much it would cost, Lei said, "Before we launch the car we may not release the price before that."

When asked if the company would follow the same business model for the Le See all-electric smart car as it does with its other hardware, i.e, subsidise cost, Jia said, "There's a shared philosophy between our verticals. One day the car will be free."

Lei added, "[The LeSee is] a D-class car. That doesn't mean the D-class is our target market."

LeEco also launched its fourth generation Super TVs - Super 4 X50 Pro/Super 4 X50/Super 4 X50 CSL.

Disclosure: LeEco paid for the flights and accommodation for Gadgets 360 to attend its Beijing launch event.
