DIY Laser Cut Acrylic iPhone Dock

DIY Laser Cut Acrylic iPhone Dock

We have seen tons of different homemade iPhone docks and stands here on geeky gadgets, like our very own recycled CD iPhone stand , this new one which was created by Tod Kurt looks pretty cool, it was made from laser cut pieces of acrylic.

DIY Laser Cut Acrylic iPhone Dock

DIY Laser Cut Acrylic iPhone Dock

Tod used four pieces of 1/4 inch acrylic, and all screwed together, I think it looks really cool, maybe a larger version would look great as well.

It is made of four slices of 1/4″ acrylic (actual width 0.22″). The top two slices have an oval opening just snug enough to fit the iPod connector and keep it in place with friction. The third slice has a channel for the cable to escape out the back, and the bottom slice keeps the cable from falling out and provides some pushback when the iPhone is inserted.

If you want to make your own, head on over to Tod’s websitefor full instructions and downloads.

Apple iPad 2 To Feature Front And Rear Cameras?

Apple iPad 2 To Feature Front And Rear Cameras?

We are expecting Apple to announce the iPad 2 some time early next year, and already the rumors of what the second generation iPad 2 will feature are starting to appear.

According to Reuters, who have spoken to a number of component manufacturers for the current iPad, the iPad 2 will features two cameras, one on the back and one on the front.

Apple iPad

We have heard the iPad 2 would feature at least one camera before, and many people think it will come with just one camera, but we suspect the Reuters report may be right and we will see 2 cameras in the iPad 2.

One of the features that Apple will want to promote in the iPad 2 is FaceTime, and whilst FaceTime would work fine with one camera, it would work much better and use all the features that Apple advertises with two cameras just like on the iPhone 4.

iPad 2 Coming At iOS 4.3 Launch Event Next Week?

iPad 2 Coming At iOS 4.3 Launch Event Next Week?

We recently heard a rumor that the iPad 2 will officially be unveiled on the 9th of February, and now there is another rumor that Apple has an iOS 4.3 event scheduled for next week and they will also unveil the iPad 2 at the same time.

This would tie in with the 9th of February announcement date that we heard before, although we would have thought that Apple would have announced the iPad 2 separately from iOS 4.3.

iPad 2

When the original iPad was announced last year it was announced at one event whilst iOS 4.0 was announced at a seperate event, although iOS 4.3 isn’t as major an update as iOS 4.0 was so the two being announced could be quite possible.

This week we have seen some leaked pictures of what is reported to the the new display for the iPad 2, and we are expecting the iPad 2 to come with a front facing and rear facing camera, just yesterday we heard that the rear facing camera could be a 3 megapixel one.

Lets hope that the iPad 2 announcement comes next week, I can’t wait to see how Apple has improved on the original iPad and also what new features and hardware it will have.

Apple has now announced their third iPad, have a look at our handy guide on the iPad 3 vs iPad 2to see the difference between the two versions.

Hennessey Venom Supercar Becomes Faster Production Car Hitting 270.49mph (video)

Hennessey Venom Supercar Becomes Faster Production Car Hitting 270.49mph (video)

If you are in the market for a new supercar and have been saving up to purchase the fastest production car ever made, it is now the Hennessey Venom.

The Hennessey Venom supercar has narrowly won the title of the fastest production car in the world by beating the previous holder, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport’s. Breaking its record of 269.86 mph by hitting 270.49mph, check out the video after the jump to learn more.

Hennessey Venom Supercar

The Hennessey Venom supercar offers drivers a massive 1244bhp thanks to its 7.0-litre twin-turbo GM-sourced V8, and claimed the new record by settting a new time at the Kennedy Space Center, thanks to the steady hands of test pilot Brian Smith on February 14th 2014.

Hennessey Venom Supercar-3

Hennessey Venom Supercar-1

Hennessey Venom Supercar-2

During the record setting run the Hennessey Venom supercar accelerated from 120mph to 220mph in a fraction under ten seconds and then decelerated from its v-max to 70mph in just under 1000 metres. I wonder how long it will take Bugatti to tweak their Bugatti Veyron Super Sport’s a little more to claim the title back.

100% Analogue Smartphone Controlled Modelling Guitar Amplifier (video)

100% Analogue Smartphone Controlled Modelling Guitar Amplifier (video)

Watch the video below to learn more about this fascinating guitar amplifier that provides a 100 percent to signal path and can be built in a number of different configurations.

Modelling Guitar Amplifier

Klonz Labs has created a 100 percent analogue Modelling Guitar Amplifierthat can be controlled using your smartphone, tablet or MIDI board.

One thing you will have to do is provide the tubes which unfortunately are not included within the kits. But if you are interested in only one they are now available over on the Kickstarter website to back priced from $69 upwards.

The world of guitar amps today is divided in two : There are the “modelling” amps, which are amazing digital devices capable to re-create the transfer function of real amps through powerful signal processors. Portable, easy to use, hundreds of sounds on hand, BUT, many people say they’re not exactly “the Real Thing”: the feel, when you play them, is simply not “real”.

There are the traditional tube amps, which didn’t evolve much in the past fifty years, but that, for most of us, have “THE” tone we want. But they’re heavy, the good ones are still expensive, and, unless you’re a rockstar, you can’t carry more than one with you. We put together an Arduino-Based Digital Controller with four Full-Tube Modules: Vintage Pre-Amp, Modern Pre-Amp, Power Amp, Power supply.

Raspberry Pi Arcade

Now that the new quad core Raspberry Pi 2 into mini computer has been launched providing quad core power for your needs. You might be interested in building your very own retro Raspberry Pi powered arcade cabinet. But if you are a little worried about having to program the mini computer, how about building one with no programming necessary.

The team over at the I Like To Make Stuff website has put together a tutorial together with a list of everything that you require for the Raspberry Pi Arcade as well as providing easy to follow instructions.

If you are quite happy to play using a USB keyboard than the process of setting up a retro arcade system using your Raspberry Pi is even easier. However if you want to go the whole hog and use joysticks and arcade buttons than the process will require a little wiring and woodwork crafting skills.

Check out the video below to learn how easy it is to create your very own retro arcade system using the Raspberry Pi mini PC and a RetroPie download.

“While making this video, I actually found that the software that I use, RetroPie, has been updated and SIGNIFICANTLY improved! It’s fantastic !!  Kudos to those guys for making a really stellar package that is free for anyone to use!!!  Since I made my original version, the controller board, IPAC2, has also been updated.  The newer version has some new options, and looks pretty great, although I have no real reason to replace mine.”

Raspberry Pi Touchscreen 5 Inch Display BackPack Unveiled By Adafruit For $70

Raspberry Pi Touchscreen 5 Inch Display BackPack Unveiled By Adafruit For $70

Developers and makers that enjoy building projects using the Raspberry Pi mini PC , might be interested in a new 5 inch Raspberry Pi touchscreen display which has been unveiled by Adafruit this week.

Raspberry Pi

The new Raspberry Pi touchscreen displayis available in two versions with one being video only and the other video plus touch providing a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels.

Raspberry Pi

As well as support for unencrypted video and pipe out the raw 24-bit colour pixel data, although HDCP is not supported. The Raspberry Pi touchscreen shows up as a USB mouse so you can use it with any computer, without the need for any special drivers. The new Raspberry Pi touchscreen is now available to purchase for $69.96 from the Adafruit online store. Adafruit explain :

“You can even power the entire display from a USB port. With the default 5″ 800×480 display and 50mA backlight current, the current draw is 500mA total. You can reduce that down  370mA by running the backlight at half-brightness (25mA). With the backlight off, the decoder and display itself draws 250mA. If you want more backlight control, there’s a PWM input, connect that to your microcontroller or other PWM output and you can continuously dim the backlight as desired.

In particular, we suggest it for use with single board computers (or desktop/laptops!) with DVI/HDMI output like the Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone Black. You can power the driver over USB as long as your computer can supply 500mA on the USB port, and then feed it video via the HDMI port. Please note the TFP401 decoder chip does not contain a video scaler, it will not resize/shrink video!”
