will release no sooner than 2016 and no later than 2017. That window opens up a lot of possibilities for when we can expect to see Square Enix's grand JRPG launch for home consoles, but rest assured that the game director has already promised more news will come soon regarding the release date for the game.
Final Fantasy XV's game director Hajime Tabata spoke with Gamespotrecently about the mysterious release date of the game. He explained that the game is developing on schedule and that this isn't going to be another development hell scenario like Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Duke Nukem Forever or The Last Guardian , saying...
We really do get the feeling that people are a bit worried. Certainly, one thing I would like to say to them to reassure them, is that we've set down the release date, we know when it is, and we've got a complete road map lined up, right up to launch, and we're proceeding along that as planned.
We can certainly say to people: it's not going to be 2017. It's going to be before that
According to Tabata, they will announce when they're going to be announcing the release date for Final Fantasy XV around PAX Prime.
Many gamers expected to hear about the game's release date at some point around the Tokyo Game Show in the middle of September, next month. However it's likely that we'll be getting a new gameplay trailer at TGS and the release date at PAX Prime at the end of the month.
Final Fantasy XV has been one of those games that's been shrouded in development mystery. The game was originally supposed to be Final Fantasy Versus XIII but things didn't quite pan out. It was supposed to be part of a series of Final Fantasy games included with Final Fantasy XIII trilogy but it all fell apart.
Although, to be fair, it's probably for the best that there's now some strong separation between Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XV . A lot of gamers weren't entirely keen on XIII series of games and felt as if Lightning wasn't charismatic enough to carry the game series and that the story was too thin to get invested in. Nevertheless, some people still really loved the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, it just didn't branch out in its appeal quite in the same way as some previous games in the series did.
As for Final Fantasy XV ... Square is coming in with an all new take on the franchise and the revolutionary combat system and top-notch graphics are actually enough to win over a lot of gamers. The ability to drive around and explore the massive game world, fight all different kinds of monsters and soldiers, and utilize an anime-style fighting mechanic has netted the upcoming game a solid following.
We'll see if Tabata holds to his statements and Square announces some more details on the release date when PAX Prime arrives.
