When rebooting an old television show for the silver screen, it has become tradition in Hollywood to try and find some way to include the original stars. We have seen it happen time and time again, from Johnny Depp and various others showing up in 21 Jump Street to Dirk Benedict and Dwight Schultz showing up in The A-Team . Now that a Power Rangers rebootis on the way, most of us probably assumed that cameos from the original cast were a possibility, but now one of the stars has come forward and admitted that he will be in the film.
Jason David Frank, who many of you may remember as Tommy Oliver a.k.a. the Green/White Ranger on the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers , has revealed that he has already been having conversations with the people behind the new Power Rangers movie and that he will, at the very least, have a cameo in the feature. ComicBook.comcaught up with the actor/MMA fighter at the recently held Nashville Wizard World Comic Con, and during the interview got the scoop on what kind of role we can expect him to play in the film. Asked about his "involvement" with the project, Frank said,
"I probably will be involved. They talked to me about it. I dont know how much I am involved, but for sure cameos at least in the reboot movie."
He added that he doesn't know too much about his involvement yet simply because they're being very tight-lipped about the film, but it is interesting that he has already been talking with those involved. It's also worth noting that the Power Rangers movie is still in rather early development. After the project was first announced in May, it wasn't until Julythat the production brought on X-Men: First Class scribes Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz to pen the script. What's more, there has recently been some turbulence behind-the-scenes, as Roberto Orci was forced to drop out of his executive producer role earlier this week due to his commitments to Star Trek 3 (which he is directing).
All that being said, Lionsgate is very keen on getting this Power Rangers movie made - so much so that they've already put an end date on it. Last month it was revealed that the film has already been dated for release on July 22, 2016, which means that we can probably expect cameras to start rolling somewhere around the start of next summer. That, of course, means that the next few months are going to be filled with all kinds of news and updates, so stay tuned!
