The PICTAR has taken to the Kickstarter crowdfunding website to raise $100,000 to go into production and is already halfway there. Its creator explains more about its inspiration and design.

The story of Pictar began 9 years ago at the Mac-World show in San Francisco: Steve Jobs was standing on the huge stage, wearing his usual jeans and black turtleneck. Toward the end of his presentation, Jobs excitedly introduced the first iPhone, and just like that he changed the world of photography as we know it.

The problem is that these advanced cameras are packed inside a smartphone. The thin, sleek and slick device doesn’t offer any secure external grip or controls with the characteristics of traditional DSLR cameras we’ve come to appreciate. Along with the availability of the smartphone, we’ve become accustomed to (or rather, we have compromised on) two matters of principle: First, we still use the smartphone’s camera in the most awkward way, and pray it doesn’t slip out of our fingers and fall to the ground (and indeed sometimes it doesn’t); and secondly, most of us never utilize even a fraction of the iPhone camera’s enormous potential, because no one has the time or patience to browse through endless internal menus.

The result? In most cases, we shoot in auto mode and compromise on picture quality. It’s like coupling a Formula One engine with a steering wheel and gearbox of a golf cart – the engine’s potential just cannot reach the road… no matter how skilled the driver is.

To make a pledge and back the PICTAR jump over to the Kickstarter crowdfunding website where pledges are available from $70 for super early bird backers.
