How Viola Davis Would Have Handled Jared Leto's Suicide Squad Gifts

There is a common phrase that is true for most endeavors: know your audience.

There is a common phrase that is true for most endeavors: know your audience. This truth is applicable to a variety of situations, including comedy and practical jokes. It seems nobody understands this concept quite like actor Jared Leto. We’ve been reporting about the bizarre and disgusting gifts that Jared Leto sent to his Suicide Squad co-stars during filming, but it now appears that the incomparable Viola Davis, who plays tough as nails Amanda Waller, was not given the same treatment. Davis recently opened up regarding said gifts with: I did not receive any, personally, or else I would have got my husband -- who was called the headache ball back in the day when he played football. I would have said, ‘Take care of The Joker’.
That’s right people. Viola Davishas an Emmy, a Tony, and handful of Oscar noms and she is not putting up with any inappropriate gifts. This statement, which comes to us from E!, showed how little patience she has for being treated like anything other than a lady.

It does appear that Viola Davis is in the minority, though. Jared Leto and the members of Suicide Squad have been very open about the unorthodox presents he was sending to his co-stars. Margot Robbie, who plays his girlfriend/punching bag/accomplice Harley Quinn was sent a live rat in a box. Jay Hernandez, who plays Diablo, was sent joker cards, a letter full of murderous thoughts, and another mystery we haven’t been privy to.

Most recently, it has come to light that Jared Leto also sent even more racy giftsto some of his costars. Namely, he sent anal beads and used condoms to an undisclosed number of Suicide Squad cast members. Considering how strongly Viola Davis felt about receiving inappropriate gifts, it’s clear that the latter would not be remotely acceptable for the actress.

Of course, Jared Leto’s bizarre behavior isn’t just for kicks and giggles (although I’m sure they happened, too). Leto went full method actingfor his role as The Joker, and found it imperative to create a sense of discomfort and unease around the Joker with the rest of the members of the Suicide Squad. He sent sexual gifts because The Joker has no boundaries, and animals both dead and living to show how truly disturbed the villain’s mind is. And it appears that his co-stars actually appreciated his approach to the character, and have greatly praised his performance.

While the extreme use of method acting and strange gifts might not be your cup of tea, it’s clear that Suicide Squad looks like a wild and fun moviegoing adventure. While Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice may have launched the DCEU, Suicide Squad will likely get people actually invested and excited about the future of the Universe.

Suicide Squad will premiere August 5th, 2016.
