The DLC may be simply named "Awakening" but when combined with the rest of the Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 title it all gets kind of lengthy.
title it all gets kind of lengthy. That's probably how Xbox One and PC gamers feel about having to wait for the release of the new DLC... that it's been lengthy. Well, there's no more waiting involved once March 3rd rolls around, because that's when Xbox and PC gamers will be able to dive into the latest bit of DLC.
Originally Sony managed to nab a month's time of exclusivity with the Awakening DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 . The DLC is available on the PS4 right now after it launched at the beginning of the month. Xbox One and PC users will have to wait until March 3rd next month to get their hands on it after the release date was announced in the press release issued by Activision.
The DLC for Xbox One and PC will be the same as the one currently available on the PlayStation 4 and that includes the highly popular and very replayable Der Eisendrache map. The map is filled to the brim with all sorts of crazy Easter Eggs, including a series of special upgrades for the Wrath of the Ancients bow and arrow kit. The different upgrades present give gamers an opportunity to customize their play-experience and utilize a very devastating weapon that can very well help them out later on in the rounds.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3's latest DLC isn't just about zombies, though. There are some brand new multiplayer maps present as well, including the the futuristic version of the Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 map called Hijacked. In the new version the map is called Skyjacked and it features a flying yacht of sorts where players can run around, hop off walls and blast each other to bits across upper and lower decks.
One of the maps that really stands out and managed to capture my attention was Splash, a water-park map themed around slides, rides and water attractions. It's not the largest map on the block and it doesn't really do anything new in the gameplay department, but it's bright, it's happy and it's very colorful. Heck, at first glance you might assume it's a DLC map for the Wii U's very popular Splatoon .
The Gauntlet maps is an interesting one, as it takes place in a jungle, an arctic zone and a city arena. It's designed in lanes and will probably feel very familiar to MOBA players coming off of titles like SMITE or League of Legends . There's a lot of leeway in the map to formulate some great rushdown team strategies, making it a perfect map for fast-paced competitive play.
The last of the four major multiplayer maps is Rise, a snowy map set within a construction site near a research campus... the Coalescence research campus to be exact. For those of you who don't know, Coalescence plays a significant role in the story of Black Ops 3 , so I'm sure you'll spot some story-related Easter Eggs in there when you get a chance.
While some of the critics weren't fond of the story of this latest Call of Duty , I actually found it to be quite refreshing for the simple fact that it was hardcore, it wasn't another patriotic army recruiting tool, and it told a bleak, tragic story about friends turning into enemies while losing their minds along the way. It was some crazy stuff with some hard-to-shake visual imagery.
You can pick up a digital copy of the Awakening DLC for Black Ops 3 on the PS4 right now, or grab a digital copy for the Xbox One and PC on March 3. The DLC is not available for the Xbox 360 or PS3. You can visit the official websitefor more info.
