A new Attack on Titan game is heading to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita and, thanks to a recent demonstration from Sony at Tokyo Game Show, we now have eight minutes’ worth of action to ogle in anticipation of the game’s launch.
Tokyo Game Show may be coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean we’re out of announcements and new footage to share. Take this latest footagefrom an Attack on Titan demonstration, for instance. In it, we get to see Erin train with faithful buddy Armin before heading out to the streets of the city to lay waste to encroaching titan threats.
For those unfamiliar with the show, Attack on Titan takes place in a world where humanoid monstrosities mysteriously appear one day and start eating folks. Humanity eventually retreats to a massive city where they protect themselves behind a series of three walls. After years of peace, however, the titans find a way into the city and all hell breaks loose. Rather than live their lives in fear, an army of brave citizens decide to take the fight to the titans, using some pretty rad grappling hooks and swords to get the job done.
Another Attack on Titan game appeared on the 3DS earlier this year and you may remember that we weren’t totally jazzedabout it. To be fair, the game actually controlled surprisingly well, the movement felt exactly like the show and the combat was pretty satisfying. The big issues were a lack of any sort of variety and some pretty bland mission types outside of “kill all of the titans.” But if you ever wanted to feel like Spider-Man crossed with a ninja and thrown into a battle with kaiju, it did a decent enough job.
This PlayStation offering, which is being produced by Omega Force( Dynasty Warriors ), looks very similar to the 3DS gamein all the right ways. The movement looks fluid and the combat looks exciting. The 3DS game had a timing-based mechanic tied to the attacks that I actually made taking down titans more interesting, but that doesn’t seem to be part of the equation here. Hopefully Omega Force has some other systems at play that will be equally entertaining.
In just eight minutes, it already looks like the PS4 Attack on Titan is more of a structured game than the 3DS’ loosely tied together encounters, so that’s another mark in the plus column.
As for this latest swing at the property, Attack on Titan is due out by the end of the year in Japan and sometime in 2016 here in the States.
