How Suicide Squad Will View Harley Quinn's Madness

With production on Suicide Squad scheduled to start in April, David Ayer is ramping up his work on getting everything prepped beforehand, from reading the New 52 Suicide Squad books to teasing what weapons the team will be using in the film.

the team will be using in the film. One of the biggest questions fans have is how these characters will be presented in the film, specifically on The Wolf of Wall Street actress Margot Robbie’stake on Harley Quinn, one of the lead players. This being her theatrical debut, it’s important to portray the character faithfully, and the director is already taking steps to work out one of her most crucial aspects: her madness.

Ayer took to Twitter earlier this week to share some details on how the movie will address Harley Quinn’s psychosis, specifically concerning her love for The Joker.

The case of Harley Quinn: Her madness defines her. Is she mad because of WHO she loves or because she loves him so much? #skwad

As a primer for those not familiar with her history, Dr. Harleen Quinzel was originally a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum who was keen on treating The Joker. After multiple sessions with him, she fell madly in love with him and became his sidekick just so she could be with him. Unfortunately for her, this came at the cost of her sanity.

Although she has broken free of Joker’s control on several occasions and struck out on her own, the Clown Prince of Crime accomplished his job of permanently corrupting her mental state. The fact that she continues to dress clown-like goes to show how much influence he has had on her. So from both the comic books and other media stories, it’s likely the "who" that has made her so crazy. She may have had her issues before she met Joker, but it’s debatable whether she would have gone off the deep end if she had never met him.

Harley’s relationship with Joker in this film hasn’t been divulged yet, although there have been reportsthat Joker will be transported to Belle Reve prison by Amanda Waller and be used as a means to keep Harley in check after she is enlisted into the Squad. Harley is said to be one of Suicide Squad ’s three main characters, the other two being Joker (Jared Leto) and Deadshot (Will Smith). The rest of the film’s lineup includes Captain Boomerang, Rick Flag, Enchantress and Amanda Waller, as well as rumored appearances from Lex Luthor and Batman. The story will revolve around a group of incarcerated super villains who are sent out on high-risk, black-ops missions by the U.S. government in exchange for reduced prison sentences or other forms of leniency.

Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 5, 2016.
