Destiny Is Adding Sparrow Racing

Sony hasn't been messing around with the PlayStation Experience weekend.

Sony hasn't been messing around with the PlayStation Experience weekend. This year's event has played host to all sorts of huge announcements and great trailer and content reveals for some of the biggest games on the market, including Bungie's Destiny . What did the shooter game receive? An announcement for a Sparrow racing league.

The trailer is short and snappy, clocking in at just a minute and a half. However, it wastes little time in getting to the point and giving gamers a look at the upcoming content update for the first-person shooter. It was posted on the official Destiny YouTube channeland you can check it out below.

Starting December 8th, and lasting for three weeks, the Sparrow racing league will be a staple event in the online multiplayer Destiny experience.

I'll be the first to say I'm no fan of Destiny , but I'll also be the first to say that the Sparrow racing league looks really fun. I think part of it is that we don't get a lot of futuristic multiplayer racing games anymore unless they're made by indie studios with games like Formula Fusion, Radial-G, Redout and Quantum Rush . Even on the Wii U, the only noteworthy futuristic racer is Shin'en Multimedia's F-Zero substitute Fast Racing Neo , which is an indie production.

In this case, Bungie is tapping an untapped genre in the main AAA space so it's likely that many of their die-hard fans will eat up the Sparrow racing league. It's not a surprising thing when you think about Bungie's past history with including racing modes and features in the Halo series, giving fans an opportunity to do more in the multiplayer modes than just shoot each other.

The Sparrow mode in Destiny looks really fleshed out, though. Right now it features two different maps for players to race across, as well as the ability to pull off tricks in the air and exercise some turbo boosts while blasting through the checkpoints.

One of the things that really stuck out to me is how there are enemy AI scattered about segments of the maps that shoot at players. It reminds me of the pod-racing in Star Wars: Episode 1 where the Sand People were shooting at the racers passing by the canyon segment.

Some very keen-eyed fans spotted a few different icons during the race that made them think that power-ups will play a role in the race at some point.

One thing that is guaranteed is that players will be able to earn rewards by participating in and winning the races. They don't exactly say what kind of rewards will be available but it's hinted at that upgrades for the Sparrow will be available. I wonder if it will also be stuff that carries over into the campaign mode?

You can look for the Sparrow racing league event to get underway on December 8th in just a few days.
